Installing and running DiskPatch
back to Introduction next to Starting DiskPatch

Diskpatch is distributed in 2 formats:

  • A Windows setup program (DiskPatch_Setup.exe): a setup wizard will install the User Guide, a Boot Disk Builder and the uninstaller on your PC.
  • A bootable diskette image (separate download): this diskette image can be used by Linux- and other non-Windows users to create a bootable diskette using RAW-Write or DD or any other tool that reads raw diskette images. Download the image here.

The boot disk builder allows you to create a DiskPatch bootable diskette, or a bootable CD/DVD that contains the DiskPatch files.
If you wish to create a custom boot disk yourself, you can extract the DiskPatch executable and copy it to a location of your choice.

When using a bootable CD/DVD, DiskPatch will not be able to save its files (log-, undo- and configuration) to the default location. You can choose a different location for the files when DiskPatch starts, and DiskPatch will perform repairs even when no log- and undo files can be saved, but using a floppy boot diskette or a bootable USB key is still the preferred way to run DiskPatch: that way you can be sure that all necessary files can be saved.
You can also use a USB key or disk to save the DiskPatch files, read more about this here.

Note: The DOS (FreeDOS) version that is distributed with DiskPatch attempts to be 100% MS-DOS compatible. DiskPatch is 100% MS-DOS compatible. If you experience problems (especially run-time errors) while using the included bootable diskette or CD/DVD, contact DIY DataRecovery support.

There are two ways to prepare DiskPatch:

1. create a bootable diskette or CD/DVD.
2. create a bootable USB key or -stick.

Both methods are described below.

Prepare DiskPatch for running, method 1: bootable diskette or CD/DVD

Once DiskPatch has been installed on your system, click Start, Programs, "DIY DataRecovery DiskPatch", "Bootable Diskette or CD Builder":

The Boot Disk Builder offers 3 options:

  • Create boot diskette: select this option to create a bootable diskette.
  • Create boot CD/DVD: select this option to burn a bootable CD/DVD.
  • Extract DiskPatch: copy the DiskPatch program to a location you choose. The executable (DP.EXE) will be extracted from the diskette image and copied to a drive you select. Use this option if you wish to create a custom boot disk or bootable USB key, and copy the program (DP.EXE) to the new bootable disk or drive yourself.

Use the resulting diskette or CD/DVD to start the PC and run DiskPatch.

Prepare DiskPatch for running, method 2: bootable USB key or -stick

Once DiskPatch has been installed on your system, click Start, Programs, "DIY DataRecovery DiskPatch", "Create bootable USB key for DiskPatch":

This will display an instruction page that will guide you through the process. Use the resulting USB key to start the PC and run DiskPatch.

If you are using an operating system other than Windows:

Rather than downloading the DiskPatch Windows installation file, download the diskette image from the DIY DataRecovery website here. Use any tool capable of writing a sector by sector diskette image to a diskette (for example Raw-Write or DD) to create a bootable diskette containing FreeDOS and the DiskPatch files.
The manual can be found online at this location.
