Registration details

Important: before purchasing you should carefully consider which license you need based on your situation. Make sure to review the license information before making a choice.

About the Trial version:
If you run DiskPatch without a (valid) license Key, the program will run in 'Trial-Mode': all features are enabled and accessible, but DiskPatch will not write any changes to the disk. To obtain a valid license key you must purchase a license.
The Trial mode allows you to diagnose the problem disk and create the Support Analysis log. This log will give us the information we need to help you on your way to a speedy recovery. Installing the Trial version, creating the log and letting us take a look is the perfect way to get started; it's safe and completely free of charge.

Refer to the DIY DataRecovery website for details on purchasing DiskPatch or go directly to our Online Shop.

After you have purchased a license:

You will receive a confirmation email that contains the DiskPatch license key. This key unlocks the full functionality of the program.
Enter your license key when DiskPatch prompts you to do so. If you wish to re-enter your license key (because you have upgraded your license and have received a new key) you can do so by selecting the "enter license key" option from the "options" menu.

How DiskPatch handles the license key:

When the license key has been entered correctly, DiskPatch stores the key so you will not have to enter it the next time DiskPatch is run. The key is stored in 2 locations:
- in a file on the boot diskette (if DiskPatch was started from the boot diskette)
- in the sector on the hard disk that DiskPatch claims for administrative purposes (read more about this in our faq here)
When DiskPatch is started it looks for the license key in the following locations, in the following order:
- in the key file
- in the administrative sector on the hard disk(s)

Please note that the key is only saved to the hard disk when the key is entered in the "enter registration key" display which appears when starting DiskPatch for the first time; if a license key file is found on the boot diskette or bootable CD/DVD, the key is NOT transferred to the hard disk. This is useful for pro users [*].

Example scenarios: When you enter the license key for the first time:
Home user, using a boot diskette DiskPatch will save it to the boot diskette AND to the hard disk. The next time you start DiskPatch it will attempt to read the key from the diskette, or from the hard disk. Creating a fresh boot diskette (which would not contain the license key file) makes no difference, since DiskPatch will then read the key from the hard disk.
Home user, using a bootable CD/DVD DiskPatch will save it to the hard disk. The next time you start DiskPatch it will attempt to read the key from the hard disk. Creating a fresh boot diskette (which would not contain the license key file) makes no difference, since DiskPatch will then read the key from the hard disk.
Pro user, using a boot diskette DiskPatch will save it to the boot diskette AND to the hard disk. The next time you start DiskPatch it will attempt to read the key from the diskette, or from the hard disk. As a pro user you may wish to avoid this [*]; leaving the license key on a client's hard disk is not good practice.
Pro user, using a bootable CD/DVD DiskPatch will save it to the hard disk. The next time you start DiskPatch it will attempt to read the key from the hard disk. As a pro user you may wish to avoid this [*]; leaving the license key on a client's hard disk is not good practice.

[*]: As a pro user you would not wish to leave the license key on the client's hard disk. Avoid this by creating a boot diskette or bootable CD/DVD that already contains the license key file; you won't have to enter the key manually so it won't be saved to the hard disk.

How to create a bootable CD/DVD that contains the license key file:

  • create the DiskPatch DOS boot diskette
  • start DiskPatch from the diskette by booting the PC from this diskette
  • enter your license key
  • exit DiskPatch

Now use this DOS boot diskette as an image for the bootable CD/DVD.

If you wish to add the DP.KEY file to your bootable CD/DVD manually, create a plain ASCII file (using for example Notepad) named DP.KEY. Type your license key in this file, without any spaces or other control characters. Place the DP.KEY file in the same location as the DiskPatch executable (DP.EXE).

The license key and using forensic mode:

Using forensic mode will change the way the license key reading is handled. If forensic mode is enabled, the administrative sector on the hard disk is not used. If a license key file does not exist and the key is stored on the hard disk, you would still need to enter the key at this point because the key won't be read from the administrative sector.
