Words of encouragement
Next to Introduction

First of all, thank you for choosing, trying and using DiskPatch.

We understand that getting started with disk or data recovery may seem daunting at first; apart from dealing with the data loss situation (and the stress involved) you need to get acquainted with a new tool and some new terminology. Don't let this scare you!
Yes, data recovery can be a complicated process but we have made every effort to guide you through as easily as possible. One of the key factors in this is our support forum which allows us to communicate with you quickly and efficiently. Also, DiskPatch is capable of creating a 'Support Analysis log file' that gives us a lot of the information we need to get you on your way to a speedy recovery.
This manual contains a lot of information and we understand that it's not really easy to work through some of the material, especially if you are new to data recovery. That coupled with the fact that you're probably in a situation where you need help quickly makes reading the entire manual a huge task. So don't. There are some bits that you should read before you get going (these will be listed a little further down) but the manual is structured in a task oriented fashion, so you can read the necessary part when having to perform a certain task. You can use the walkthroughs to guide you through the repair operations. And remember that you can always contact us and request support for whatever it is you're doing, free of charge.

Getting started:

  • Step one is to stay calm. Seriously now, don't panic. You'll make mistakes that may cost you dearly if you decide to go in all stressed out. Take it easy and things will go much smoother. Your data isn't going anywhere so take the time to prepare and do it right the first time.
  • The 'getting started' section of the manual will explain what DiskPatch is, does, how to install, and what's where in the menus. More or less required reading, but if you're pressed for time you should at least read about installation and starting up DiskPatch.
  • Use the quickstart table to find out how to get started on fixing the problem.
If you REALLY need to get going without wanting to read the manual, use the recovery guides (tutorials), they'll guide you through a number of repair operations using screenshots and a minimum of text. You can also use the guides (tutorials) as a reference when performing repairs.

  • DO NOT run 'chkdsk' or 'scandisk' or any other partition repair utility
  • DO NOT use the Windows recovery console commands 'fixmbr' or 'fixboot'
  • DO NOT attempt to recreate a deleted partition with 'Fdisk' or 'Disk Management'
  • DO NOT change the contents of the disk or partition that needs to be recovered
