Hi Tom,

I created a CD MBRTOOL from which the machine boots. I then see a type of MS-DOS layout and I make the selections to work with the track 0 and then opt for further actions. Just like described in the manual.

How do you run MBRtool? It can not be run from within Windows, you must use the included disk builder to create either a diskette or a CD to boot the PC from.

Win 7. RAID 1 Mirror.
When I start MBRTool I see disk 012 in green and 3 in red.
MBRTools.exe /st0 /dsk:1 /fil:Bumbr
vers 2.3.200
backup track0 to file for disk 129(1)
errorcode 51
erroraddress 18900
The above occurs for disks 0 1 2
Disk 0 is where my C; drive is where the machine is usually booted from.

When using disk 3 the next happens:
mbrtool.exe /st0 /dsk:3 /fil:bumbr
backup track 0 to file for disk 131(3)
-!could not read/write selected disk (RC=1)

Partition table
See attachment

Which other information can I provide you?
Regards,
Michael

Chances are that there's some flavor of Linux inside actually running the box and doing all RAID stuff etc.. So it could very well work, take out the disks and mount them in Linux (linux does hfs right?).

Correct.
If the disk system was used on a Mac as-is iRecover will not be able to read data from it.

After a closer inspection it seems that this drive is delivered from Western Digital preformatted with HFS+

So it might be possible that iRecovery cant help us anyway  Undecided

I can't speak from experience in this particular case but in general the controller does all the "stuff", striping etc. So if the disks contain a file system that is known to iRecover it should work fine. You could contact the manufacturer to see if you can get the details from them, stripe size and such, and then enter that manually in iRecover. But if it was used on an Apple the file system may not be known to iRecover. You should first make sure that the disks contain a file system that is known.

Any chance you can attach the iRecover log file to a posting?

Hello

We received a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II that was dead. The controller itself was toasted, but the disks spin up and function as they should so we are able to read from them.

However, we cannot find any relevant data on it.

I was wondering if anybody had done any recovery from a WD raid 0 and could shed some light on the process.
Does the WD controller do actual striping or does it just stack them on top of eachother like in a dynamic disk?

The customer said it was used on a mac, but he said he could read it on a pc as well.

Perhaps his mind is not working correctly and it actually is formatted in hfs+

Any input appreciated Smiley

The disk reset command works for the entire chain that the faulty disk is on. So in case of IDE, if you have 2 disks on a port (master and slave) and one of the disks is bad and DiskPatch issues the reset command, all disks on that port are affected. That is how it works unfortunately and we can not change that. The solution to this particular problem (and this is always a good idea) is to make sure that the faulty disk is the only disk on a port, that way no other disks are affected.

I'm not sure if that has anything at all to do with what you are facing but it is something that influences the procedures, so it's worth looking into. Apart from that I'm not sure what is happening to your disks. Any chance you can share some more details about one of these "shutdown" disks? Connection type, size, exact type/name details, etc. If possible create a SMART check log (details here: http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_smartcheck.htm)
