Hello,

If it was a VHD file which was an uncompressed raw file, with a fixed size then it is possible to treat the disk as a normal disk.

Thanks Joep for the quick response.  I'm not up to speed on data recovery.  Can you add a little more detail as to how one is to handle a normal disk?

Added information:  My VHD file will not work with VirtualBox as the file has developed an error so I am trying to see if there is a way to recover the data.

Depends. In Win7 a VHD can be mounted as a normal disk through Disk Management. I'm not sure if all Win7 versions have this capability. Still, this may not work if the VHD itself is corrupted.

You can feed the file to iRecover as if it's an image file, but that only works (well) if the VHD is a fixed-size VHD. Right-click in the disk selection screen and choose "load image".
