"the plex is missing"

hihi, new here.

my setup is simple, i bought two harddrives, set up one as mirror of the other in computer management. i'm not sure since when (maybe i never setup the mirror correctly since day one - that was last year), but couple of weeks ago i noticed one of the drives went "missing". the computer still function properly, files still ok. when i try to scan it for error, windows complain that it's in use, when i try to "reactivate volume" i get "the plex is missing".

not sure what happens, this computer rarely gets touched. we do get quite a few flashed power-disruptions, but there's UPS hooked up to this thing. should i remove mirror on disc 1 and remirror it? not sure if disc 2 would still be missing if i remove mirror. the thing is i dont even know which one is missing (the "original" or the "mirroring")


(i'm not sure if this is related, but could this also have something to do with my backups not completing correctly?)

The best place to look for answers on this is the MS knowledgebase. We've had this thing mentioned once before, look here for a bit more on this (this includes the link to a knowledgebase article that may help):

Doing a web search for "the plex is missing" might also help.

On the other hand, if files are accessible you can create a backup and attempt a re-mirror, but you'd need to figure out which disk is the good one.

Someone with a similar issue sent us his solution:

I have had a similar problem as you except I just forgot to plug the power cord back in on one of my drives that was partitioned to be half virtual raid 1 and the rest a normal volume. After some messing around and googling to no avail, I realized in the "create and format hard drive partitions" utility there was a new block on the left with no drive information separate from the failed portions. All I needed to do to fix the issue was to click it and go through and add the failed partition to it. Now everything is back to normal. Hope this helps anyone who finds themself in a similar situation."

  thanks for the replies, i should've dubbed my subject with "not the other plex is missing thread!".

how do i know which one is the good or bad without physically removing the disc and testing them out that way?


the "server2" thing is my backup drive that already has the stuff i want backed i think.

It seems obvious which disk to trust, from the image, disk 0. You can try importing the foreign disk, or re-create the mirror, but for details on this you should look at the MS knowledgebase.
