I have a Maxtor 250GB drive in an external enclosure that shows up in Drive Manager as Unallocated Space. I have a lot of data on this drive that I need to recover. Is it possible and which product would you recommend for this task?

Hello,

In diskmanagement, unallocated means 'unpartitoned'. So it looks like the partition table has been wiped. In many cases this can be repaired in place using DiskPatch. That's where I would start: http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_supportanalysis.htm.

With a logfile we can pretty much predict if the partition(s) can be undeleted.

You don't explain what happened to the drive, so it's impossible to make an accurate prognosis for recovery, but (assuming you selected the correct scanning method) one item is found that points to a partition. That should be enough to repair the partition, if no other damage exists. So you should be able to go ahead and fix this with DiskPatch.

Nothing actually happened to the drive. No physical damage, no accidental format, fixmbr, or partitioning on the drive. The last time it was connected, everything worked just fine. I used it to backup files from a clients hard drive that had been infected with malware.
I will try Diskpatch and let you know the results.

DiskPatch full scan was able to locate the partition, quick scan failed to locate it. I then ran the repair and was able to recover more than 50,000 files and over 3,000 folders.
Two issues that may have caused the initial problem.

  • 1.) While transferring data to a new drive I could hear the armature inside the drive making high pitched noises occasionally (Not head to disk noises)
  • 2.) Apparently there was only 450MB of free space on a 250GB drive.
In any case, thank you very much for the help and the software. (*breaths big SIGH of relief) This is one tool I plan on keeping for a very long time and will highly recommend.

Thank you again,

~Sapper
