Attempting to recover data from a laptop hard drive. It is connected via a USB adapter. 40 gig HD. Volume analysis has been running for 21 hrs. Status 2%.
TimeOut = 100
Retry = 1
Avoid   checked
Skip factor 2048
Read cache  176  ( started at default and have been increasing )
Write  16
Volume Map has top row with 3 file structure stamps and 9 data fragment stamps.
ANY suggestions
During normal useage this bad drive says " would you like to format"

Could you tell a bit more about how this happened, what happened before the drive stopped working?

It sounds like either the USB connection is causing delays or the drive is having physical problems. Check the drive's health by looking at the SMART report and report back please (right-click the drive in the drive selection window and select 'S.M.A.R.T. information'. if you need assistance interpreting the results post the information here).

It's probably best to stop this operation, especially if the disk is having physical problems.

Also, we have version 5.2 out, the update is free. Make sure you have the latest version running.

Version is current. I have no information on how or why it stopped. The laptop it comes from appears 'abused" though. SMART is greyed out when checking. The drive spins upon BOOT. Spins upon Irecover startup. No loud clicking or anything out of the ordinary. Randomly cycles "clicks" during Irecover process. Note: If I "shake" the drive I can vaguely hear sound, likes something loose. It was seeing DATA fragments. 4% after 40 hrs. My win7 OS sees the drive but wants to format it. I assume this why my ISO image sftwr doesn't see it. Not worried about letting run a few day's if that might work.
Hitachi Travel Mate. 40gb. hts548040msat00. I recover see's it fine.

Hello,

It's too slow even for USB. That being said, if there is any kind of problem accessing the disk then the first bottle neck you want out of the way is the USB part. So ideally the disk is taken out the USB enclosure and attached to a desktop PC.

If this is not an option I would try imaging the disk instead, so then you'd need a disk to store a 40 GB disk image. To image the disk using iRecover right click the physical disk in the disks and partitions list. Write the image file to an NTFS drive, preferably to a compressed folder. Then have iRecover examine the image file to recover data from it (load image file in the disks and partitions list).

We can't get SMART info over USB at this time.
