I was attempting to backup a drive when it gave error messages and became inaccessible. The drive had two paritions, a Fat32 and an NTSF. Under ubuntu, the Fat32 shows up but the other does not.

Ran Diskpatch and did the recommended repairs to the partition table. However, the NTSF partition still does not show up.

Here are the Diskpatch reports. Thanks for the help:

Please check with Windows Disk management to see if the volumes show up. Provide a screenshot if possible, for us to look at. Run disk management by typing "diskmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) in the Windows Run dialog.

If the volumes show up the solution may be as simple as you having to assign a volume letter.

I tried what you said but with the secondary drive attached, the machine did not boot. It gave an OS error and never started Windows XP.

I then tried to boot with Partition Magic 8 via floppy but it gave an error message.

Next, I mounted the drive in a USB housing and hooked it up after windows xp had booted. At this point, windows did see the drive and gave drive letters to the two partitions. However, the NTSF partition was said to be corrupted.

I looked at the parition with Parition Magic 8 and it saw both the fat32 and the ntsf partition with drive letters. It showed there was content on the partition so it looks like the info is still there. However, the windows disk manager said it was empty:

Screen capture is attached.

I can access the fat32 partition but when I try to access the ntsf parition, it says it's corrupted.

I already ran diskpatch on it. Is there any way to get that info off the ntsf partition?

Thanks.

Well, all these things point in the direction of internal file system damage, which can not be repaired. The repairable structures (that DiskPatch can fix) are okay, so the damage is in the internal systems like the MFT. You've already tried the Linux 'trick' so the only way to get the data from the volume is to copy it with a tool like iRecover.

Thanks for the help.

I downloaded the demo of IRecover and ran the analysis on the partition. It seemed to find everything and gave a reading of 794 damaged files out of over 22K.

I was trying to find an online manual to tell me what the numbers mean after the file.

The file names that I looked at are correct. Does this mean that name, if recovered, will be the file name?

Also, how do you identify the damaged files?

If there is an online manual that I can study before I make my decision to purchase, please let me know.

Thanks again. Diskpatch did allow the drive to be accessed which it would not before repair.

The manual is included, simply press a "help" or "explain" button anywhere; the help is context sensitive.
Please note that the damaged/undamaged indications are a prognosis.
All files are recovered with the filename intact, if possible.

Thanks for the help. One last question as I am confused with the help explanation. There are 3 numbers after the folder. I have enclosed a screen capture of the analysis.

Is the last number the damaged or unrecoverable files?

Thanks again. Much impressed with your products.
