I must have been sleep deprived, but I though I read on your website that your software will recover RAID 10 drives. Now I don't see that, but was wondering if it may still work.

I have 4 1.5T drives in a RAID 10 setup in Windows SBS 2008. After a reboot a while back, I noticed that the BIOS stated that the raid had been degraded, but the operating system worked fine. I noticed that a power supply cable to a hard drive had come loose. I shut down the server, plugged in the drive and rebooted. The server apparently was rebuilding the array, but after 4 hours and getting no response or messages, I tried to get back to where I was so that I could get some work done. I unplugged the drive and tried to reboot. Didn't work.

I have tried to boot up from the Windows SBS 2008 disk, but it says it can't repair the boot. After many hours of trying to get the system up, I got to the point where upon bootup, no master boot label could be found.

I googled for some help and found your website.

I ordered the software and have been able to get it to a bootable disk.

I ran DiskPatch and the repair mbr utility. Don't ask me why, but I ran it on disk 1 instead of disk 0. Repair took about 24 hours, but seemed to work. I tried rebooting, but got a message "Error loading operating system." I then tried to repair the mbr on disk 1. After about an hour, I got the message that the repair failed. I looked at the disk again and it now says protected.

I just wanted to stop, assess where I am and get you guys to walk me through what I need to do next.

Hello,

I don't understand one bit of what you're trying to do here.

Is the RAID 10 accessible? The data I mean?

What's Windows on? The RAID array or on a separate disk?

So you have DiskPatch? Please do this:
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_supportanalysis.htm for the disk you ran repairs on.

Windows SBS 2008 is on the RAID array. Windows is not recognizing the operating system. Windows appears to not be seeing the C drive. The bios does recognize that the drives are there.

TheI do have DiskPatch. I have a log file. How do I upload it to you?

Hello,

The log file: You can either simply open that using notepad and then copy/paste what's in there into the forum. Or you can zip the file and attach it to your forum message (under additional options). BUT: DiskPatch works with disks/intact arrays upto 2TB so it will not be able to help us probably. Logfile may however show us something meaningful.

It is important you describe actual things you see in verbatim. "Windows appears not to ..." does not help at all. It could be caused by a number of things and you could be even a number of things by that. Do you mean you try to boot from it (the array)? And if you try what are actual messages you see on the screen?

Quote
I have tried to boot up from the Windows SBS 2008 disk, but it says it can't repair the boot.

You mean the installation DVD?

From what we have now, from what you have told us I am not optimistic. The array was degraded but you decided to let it run right? If the BIOS tells you the array is degraded then you must act on that. If data is still accessible at that point, the number 1 prio is to get a backup.

The server apparently was rebuilding the array, but after 4 hours and getting no response or messages, I tried to get back to where I was so that I could get some work done. I unplugged the drive and tried to reboot. Didn't work.

Sounds rather suicidal to me, pulling a disk while an array is being rebuilt.

If that was my server, before doing anything else, I'd try to install Windows on a separate disk and see if this would allow me to get to the data on the array. So that would be my suggestion to you at this point.

That unfortunately is useless. And I too am completely not clear on what the hell is going on here, so let's try this:

Is the RAID functional on a hardware level? What this question means is: is the RAID functioning on a mechanical level, are the 4 disks involved still together in the RAID (according to the motherboard/controller) OR do you have 4 individual disks that just sit there?

If the latter is the case then your approach is wrong, and I'll explain:
you have 4 disks that used to be RAID 10, so you have 2 sets of disks (2 stripe sets that were mirrorred). The simplest thing to do (in my view) would be to take 2 disks of which you know they are a matching pair of striped-RAID and let iRecover work with these disks.
(based on this diagram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID_10#RAID_1_.2B_0 you take either Disk 1 and 3 or 1 and 4, or you take Disk 2 and 3, or 2 and 4)
You should be able to recover files from the stripe set. Re-creating the RAID is not going to happen and is not advisable, you'd likely destroy the data that is on the disks. On a sidenote, that DiskPatch MBR thing was a bad call if indeed the RAID set is now just 4 individual disks.

Please think about this and confirm or deny.

And what does this mean:
Quote
I ran DiskPatch and the repair mbr utility. Don't ask me why, but I ran it on disk 1 instead of disk 0.
Disk 1? Disk 0? what do they represent in this remark?

Us being able to help is completely dependant on us understanding what the situation is on your end. Do your best in explaining.

P.s: the report.txt shows 4 disks and not 1 RAID, so that suggests my evaluation and explanation above are correct.

Here is the DP file. The forum would not allow me to post so soon after my last post.

You will have to be patient with me. I am a CPA with just enough IT skills to be dangerous.

Forget my last posts. Ask me a direct question, I will give you a straight answer.

Again, not useful, though it (again) confirms my suspicions: no RAID, 4 disks. Read my previous post.

If these files are not useful, why do you ask that they be sent?

Let's see if I understand my next steps.

1.  Take existing 4 drives out of the server.
2.  Add a useable and completely different hard drive.
3.  Install Windows SBS 2008 onto the server.
4.  Add existing disks 1 and 3 to the server.
5.  Use iRecover to access/recover the data.
6.  Backup the data.
7.  Setup new RAID.
8.  Restore the backup data onto the new RAID.

Is this correct?

My mistake. I meant that the first one was not what we asked, and the second one was incomplete, so in all they didn't really help. I should have explained.

My earlier advice was based on the assumption that the RAID is broken apart into separate disks, but you haven't confirmed that. If indeed the RAID is broken apart, then yes, your steps should lead to a recovery, if the data on the disks permits (meaning, if the rebuild didn't mess things up).

Any Windows (from XP up) will do, it may be easier to setup XP or Win7, but that's just a detail.
