No data loss but having partition issues

Dell Vostro 1500 had utility, OS (active), Data and Dell MediaDirect partitions.
Wanted to eliminate active and data partitions to start fresh with Win XP Home with a larger OS partition and smaller data partition.  The utility in Dell Windows XP Reinstall disc allowed the deletion of the partitions but wont consolidate the space to allow the creation of different sized OS and data partitions.  Still want to keep MediaDirect and Utility partitions and they still seem to function (pressing the MediaDirect launch button still allows boot to MediaDirect partition.  I want OS and Data to be about 50/50 of unallocated space.  I see in PartedMagic that the MediaDirect partition and the data partition are both logical partitions in the extended partition (which is why WinXP install won't consolidate the space).  It looks like I might be able to just resize the extended partition, shrinking it by moving the start point later on disk but leaving the end point (where the MediaDirect partition is) where it is.  The way it is seems messy, I'd like to clean it up.  Can DiskPatch help clean up my partition tables to allow me to get where I want to go without destroying my MediaDirect access?

If I understand correctly it is possible, but a little tricky.

DiskPatch does indeed consolidate the extended volume (basically resize it to the size of the logical volumes in it) when rebuilding the partition table. The only problem is that the media direct volume is not a default volume type for Windows, so DiskPatch won't recreate the entry as it is now. So, you could rebuild the partition table by only selecting the volumes you want (DiskPatch would then rebuild an extended volume that fits the logicals in it) and afterwards change the volume type for the media direct volume by hand.
Number 4 in the current volume list is the DD volume. It really is a FAT32 volume that Dell "renames" to a DD type.

Make sure you have the Undo feature active, I'm not entirely sure what the effect of rebuilding will be on the functionality of the media direct function: DiskPatch will also change the MBR and the MBR plays a part in that whole dance.
