Following a power cut I had problems restsrting my desktop.  First I got a black screen with white writing progressing upwards from the bottom saying something like: "Error linexxxxx".  Then I got a CMOS error, to which I hit 'restore defaults'.  Once up, I found my second HDD had disappeared from Windows.

I've downloaded DiskPatch and the SMART analysis is at the bottom of this mail.  I have tried many times to run the Support Logfile but the progam seems to hang: the second light from left at the top right-hand of the screen goes from green to amber and finally red, which I take to mean there is a problem.  I have had the following messages while trying:

1) Error reading partition table drive 01 sector 16865

2) WARNING: partition Pri:1 FS 0B is not LBA
Please run FDISK to correct this - using LBA to access partition.
    start   0-10-51, end 4879-100-61   [note: 100 may be 108]
C:  HB2, Pri[ 1],  CHS=    0-10-51,   start=     0MB, size=  3199 MB

Smart values look okay which unfortunately is not a guarantee that the disks are ok.

When do you get those messages, doing what? Because they're not messages built into DiskPatch.

I do not know if we or DiskPatch can help, there's too little info. In order for us to help we need info, for example by examining a DiskPatch logfile. So if that won't run then there is little we can do apart from suggesting to try to clone the disk.

I think that in thise case it's best to bring the disk to a datarecovery lab that's equipped to deal with physical hard disk failures.

Hi,

I get these messages when the computer boots using the DiskPatch disk - see attachments (taken using mobile phone, lol).  I couldn't get the USB method to work, so I'm using a very elderly floppy disk.

A couple of other points I should mention:

1) as reported in another topic (SusanR I think) I sometimes get the message that read errors are greater than 29 and then I'm offered a number of options.
2) I'm currently running Win7 but I think (emphasise 'think') the disk was created under WinXP. Will that make any difference to how we go forward?
3) about half the time I reboot, the BIOS does not 'see' the problem disk.  This is solved by disconnecting / reconnecting the power supply to the problem disk and rebooting (just rebooting doesn't seem to fix it).  Any thoughts on why this might be and what steps I can take to prevent it?

I have got another bootable Win7 HD (30GB!) so I'll pull the machine apart and put that in.  That then gives me the 2TB HD (Disk 0 in the SMART analysis, new last week) available to use as a target for cloning.  While doing this I'll try again to run the Support Logfile (it isn't unavailable through want of trying, believe me).  If it does hang is there anything I can do other than Alt-Ctl-Del?

The 750GB problem disk is all but full, mostly with TV programs (have a tuner card) which I don't need to recover (I'm certain they'll be repeated!).  There are, however, a number of family photos that I'd like to recover, but I'm sure professional help would cost a lot, more than they are 'worth', so I'm good with a DIY approach.

Going back to your question about the error messages, they happen during the boot: the screen shows "Init. disk", the cursor pauses under this and blinks for a while, then the message appears.

I'm currently running the Support Logfile.  This time the 3rd light from the left at the top right-hand side went green and has now gone yellow.  The cursor is in the top LH corner and is blinking - is DiskPatch still running?  How long would you expect this analysis to take given I have 3 HDs connected (30GB IDE; 2TD SATA; 750GB SATA)?  I don't want to stop it if it is still live, but don't know if that is the case: does the blinking cursor tell me it is still active?  I don't know what is 'normal'...  It has been running about 15 - 20 mins, light still yellow.

Light went green again and has now gone red.  Cursor still blinking.  Will leave it running until you advise...

Please stop the current operation, this doesn't seem to go anywhere.
How far is the support log scan along? Did it even start?
Are you using the USB boot option to run DiskPatch? If so, we're working on a modified version to see if that may help you further. It'll be finished in a few minutes.

No, I'm using a floppy disk that must be 20 years old.  I created a bootable USB stick and set the BIOS to boot from USB2.0 device, but it just seems to get ignored and Windows starts up (i.e. it goes to the HD boot device).

Standing by with Maximum Write Error message on screen.

Ah yes. So DP isn't getting anywhere.
Please try this first:
Stop the current operation, restart and get to the DiskPatch start menu (the first menu that appears after the DP disk has booted), go to 'DiskPatch options (troubleshooting)', then select 'skip both disk- and general checks'. Then try the support log again.

Sorry, I didn't spot the 'write' error, assumed it was 'read' error. This changes things a bit. Please select 'forensic mode' (from that same 'options troubleshooting' menu), then the support log.

OK, that seems to have worked.  I selected the problem disk and hit enter and something ran. Now back to 'select disk / options / support / about / quit'.  Problem disk shows as 'protected'.

Do I want to do the same on the other 2 disks, or do I now quit, boot into Windows and send you the log?

This particular log is empty, it doesn't contain the support log info we require. Whenever DP starts it creates a fresh log and renames the log from the previous session. It seems this one was created after the support log run. So, either post all logs found on the DP disk (ZIP them up first then attach to a posting) or start DP again. The order of actions should be:
- start DP with the earlier mentioned forensic option
- once in DP, select the problem disk
- go to the Support menu and run the Support Analysis option
Post the resulting log.

I've tried a couple of times...not sure if it my understanding of how to navigate DP, or the disk.

I start DP in forensic mode.  I get a Select Disk dialogue box, go down, highlight the problem disk, press 'enter'.

I then get a pop-up saying:

     Select disk
     List partitions
     Show partition tables
     Return

"Select disk" is highlit, so I press 'enter' (maybe I should highlight "Return" at this point?).

Then get a message saying:

     Disk 2 (130) locked
     press any key

I press a key and get:

    [  Startup Checks  ]
    Disk health                           green tick (last time I got a yellow !)
    128Gb barrier                       green tick
    Dick geometry                      green tick
    Disk overlay
    Number of read retries   

Let it carry on running (3rd light from left at top RHS was yellow).  Now have a red message:

    Attention: MBR read error on disk 2 (130)
    [    Press any key   ]
