I looked at each of the options.  In "Support" I found 'Create Support Analysis Log' and selected that.  Got 'No disk selected' so went back to select disk, chose the problem disk and hit 'enter'.  Got a black popup with white lettering: "Reading disk..."

After almost 20 mins get the red warning "Attention:   MBR read error on disk 2 (130)   Press any key"

Yes, that was correct. But it all seems a bit futile, the disk allows no access at all at this point. Whatever happened, the disk has been damaged rather severely, so I'm inclined to say that we might as well stop here. The only choice remaining is either bringing the disk to a specialized recovery firm, or you could try moving the disk to another PC. The reason for the latter is that by doing so you eliminate possible influences/problems that may come from the current PC (after all, that too experienced the power troubles). If the disk doesn't work at all in another PC it's pretty clear that we've gone as far as we can go.

Is cloning the disk to another with an good MBR an option?  It seems as though when the power failed the head must have damaged the sectors containing the MBR (bearing in mind I didn't know what MBR stood for last week!) - is it possible to recover the rest without the old MBR?

Yes, that could work (it's actually done quite often; as you now know, once the MBR is gone the whole disk is basically useless), but the rest of the disk would have to be good enough to clone. So far we've not been able to even get a peek anywhere on the disk. Still, if you have a spare disk you might as well give it a try. You'll have to get past that MBR read error first but that should be possible; it's just a notification.
You can find more info here (in case you didn't find it before):
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_clone.htm

You may want to use the forensic mode for the clone as well, it will make sure that nothing on the protected disk (in this case your problem disk) is touched.

Let's give it a try.  Do I need a license key to use the wipe and clone features?

Yes. But we a have a full refund policy, so I'd say give it a go.

I've entered the reg key and have started the wipe of the target disk.  That is going to take about 3 hours by the look of it.

As you might have finished for the day by the time I start the clone, is there any advice you can give me on the options to choose, given what you know (or don't) about my disk?  Or just go with defaults?

Once cloning starts, will it just get on and do the job or is there a possibility it will hand due to the MBR read error thing (or any other reason)?

Approximately how long will cloning a 750GB disk take?

Well, as you'll have some time you might want to glance over this:
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/clone.htm

I would suggest the following settings (look for them in the 'Options' screen in DiskPatch):
All at defaults except these:
- read retries to low, say max 4
- read error threshold to 0 (disabled)
- log each read error to disabled
- disk reset after error to disabled
- skip X sectors after error to at least 8MB

Start DP in forensic mode, select the problem disk as the disk that needs to be protected, and then continue the normal clone procedure (select the problem disk first, then select 'Clone' and follow the screens). Run the full 2-pass clone.

You should keep an eye on it. It should run without interruptions (with the settings I suggested) but you never know, with a disk that is this weird. Things may not progress at all after several hours, which would mean you might as well abort. IF you abort and want to try again, start a bit further down the disk for a next attempt, say 10% of the disk's size. You can enter start/stop locations at the start of the clone procedure. You could also decide to skip the MBR (sector 0) from the get go, meaning you'd enter 1 as starting location instead of the default 0.

There's no way to predict the time that is needed. If the disk would be in good condition, say a few hours tops. But now, no idea.

Our work day is over but we usually check in from time to time, so feel free to post. We too might post more if something comes to mind.

Great - it is good to know 'someone is there': I don't usually get involved in this type of stuff...

As an aside, I think I may know why sometimes the disk isn't recognised by the BIOS - some other people seem to have had this issue as well.  I found that the disk does not always stop spinning when you power off the computer (i.e. it is still under power) and so when the computer restarts it does not seem to be recognised (which I certainly can't explain).  I found that I have to remove the power cable to the drive and reconnect it and then BIOS seems to find it every time.  The same result would be obtained by turning the power to the computer off at the wall switch.

Have a great evening!

Got the decimal point in the wrong place - wiping will take 30+ hours, so cloning will likely not start till Wednesday morning.

Wiping is advised but not absolutely necessary. Given that the clone may not work out well, or at all, I'd just skip the wipe for now and see what the clone will do.

Clone running, but seems to be skipping everything

Current sector - 474113
Blocks skipped - 29   (475136)
Write errors - 0
Timeremaining - 55316:44

Looks like nothing is being read?

Yep, looks like it. This doesn't look good. Continue or not, it's your call.

IF you abort, try to do it the 'right' way, not the reset-pc way. That way the log gets saved and we might get an idea of what's going on by looking at the error codes.

I aborted properly and restarted at around 10% of the disk: same result (skipped blocks) and at 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 68% & 82%.  Then exited DP and went into Windows to retrieve logfile.  The disk I wiped (the target) now says it needs to be formatted before it can be used - is that normal?

Logfile follows:

The disk I wiped (the target) now says it needs to be formatted before it can be used - is that normal?
Yes. The disk was wiped so whatever was on there is gone now, including any volumes. To use the disk again in the future (for uses other than as a target for a clone) you'll need to create fresh volumes. Ignore this for now.

Could you try the clone again, just a bit, but now with 'log each read error' to on (in DP options) ?

The odd thing is that some reads DO work, but after a lot of time and even a few retries. I'm not sure what to make of this. I think we've seen this before but the details escape me for now.

Last post for today, mind you, time for sleep.
