Hi,
I just ran an analysis on a 500gb drive in a Dell machine running Win XP sp3.  I had it in a Win 8.1 machine to pull data off and something happened to corrupt the FAT (I wasn't writing to it).  When I put it back in the original machine I got the BSOD with stop error 0024 while it was loading drivers.  I also tried to clone it with Acronis Diskwizard but it would not clone it.  I do have the data backed up.  Could you tell me if Diskpatch an fix the boot section?  Thank you!

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong, nothing that DiskPatch can fix anyway.

Keep in mind: if the PC gets past booting, past the loading of the first system files (even if it ends in a BSOD), the disk structures are in good order. So the problem is most likely in Windows itself.

It is possible that disk administration sections (like the MFT and/or FAT) have become corrupted, this would not show up in a support analysis log. If that is the case the only way to retrieve data is to use a tool like iRecover. MFT and FAT areas can not be repaired without at least some minor data loss, so after a 'repair' with CHKDSK the contents of the volume can no longer be trusted.

One final thought: It is never a good idea to access a disk with a windows version that is higher than the version that is on that disk. For instance: if you have a (NTFS) volume that was created by Windows XP you should not access it with Windows 8. The newer Windows (8 in this example) will 'update' the NTFS volume, and that can cause problems when you try to access that volume with its original Windows version (XP in this example).

As you have the data, you should probably just rebuild that disk. Repairing doesn't seem likely.

Hi,
Thank you for your response and your help.  I was hoping DiskPatch could do something.  When I've booted on a Win XP CD and went to have it do a repair (not the repair console but take it up to where it asks to either do a fresh install or repair) it doesn't recognize the windows partition as you can see in the attachment.  If you boot off the hard drive in Safe mode you can see it load drivers up to a point so I didn't know if there was a problem in the FAT area.

That would support the idea that there is a corruption in the volume (so not the FAT but the MFT, as it's NTFS). Unfortunately, as stated, this can not be fully repaired, so re-building the disk is all that remains.

There is another potential cause. If you like we can verify this, just in case. Do this:

The disk is physically healthy (the disk isn't causing problems), so the previous recommendation is still valid: Corruption in the volume's structures, no repair possible. Sorry.
