Originally I had a disk with partition table problems, which I repaired with DiskPatch. After that, Partition Magic still flagged the disk as BAD, and flagged invalid disk geometry (previously it was invalid Partition boundaries). Currently I am using the disk geometry that was detected by DP. --- My problem now is that I am unable to boot from the repaired disk (No POST) I made sure the boot record was fixed, and I believe the problem is that I don't have a primary bootable partition on the disk. I know that is the DP default. However when I select that partition the option to make it a Primary is greyed out. How can I get this drive to boot properly? I am using a temporary disk to boot from, and it lets me see that all of my valuable contents does not appear to have been damaged at all. I am attaching the Sipport Log that I ran today. The board doesn't do html, only bbs.

There seem to be quite a few problems here. I'll list them:
- the disk geometry is listed in the boot sectors as 255/63, but that is not used.
- the mbr is not present, there seems to be a boot sector in the mbr's location.
- the first partition on the disk is a logical (which can't be set active), and this is most likely caused by the fact that an incorrect disk geometry was used to recreate the partition tables.

Here's what to do:
- set the disk geometry to 255 heads and 63 sectors (use the option in the diskpatch options screen)
- wipe the MBR (yes, wipe the mbr. use the option from the MBR menu)
- recreate the partition tables
- fix the mbr boot code (use the mbr menu)
- set a partition active, if the partition table layout appears to be correct

Then check to see if anything can be accessed. Make sure that no disk repair tools like chkdsk are run.
If that doesn't work out, post the log of the repair action.

Thanks for the direction Tom, I have tried once tonight, and was unable to figure out how to select the partitions to repair. The list is up to 9 now, many of them being very similar. Iwll try again and run you a log.[/color]

I went back though my notes and do not see one that verifies that I repaired the Primary disks on this drive. Is it worth steping back to look? If I can do the repairs agian aand get the primaries too, it should all work..no?

This is the list you see when running the partition table repair function. I'd select number 3 and then see what goes best with that. Entry 1 seems to overlap witn number 3 so it's a bit of a mess, you should probably try entry 2 then. In the end that's what you'll have to do. Try out a few combinations and see if you can access the partitions. If not, try another combination. You could even try them one by one to find out which is the correct one. This sort of mess is created when 3rd party (non-windows) partition managers are used, or when partitions are resized or moved.
Remember, never run chkdsk or any other partition repair tool when trying to access the partitions.

Edit: you had access to your data earlier so i'm assuming that we're not working towards a recovery but towards a repair. Meaning, you have your stuff and are now looking to make it as before, with normally booting partitions. If you no longer need to recover data it may be better to reinstall and start again. That will also rid you of the partition mess that now seems to exist. Also, we're not interested in repairing boot issues, we're here to get you your data back, and as i understand it that's been achieved. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Hello Tom,  This problem is fixed - I ran undo back to the first problem, made sure the geometry in 255/63, then didd a scan. The results were straightforward, I selected the Primary partition, rebuilt it, then rebuilt the Logicals. Rebuilt the MBR and everything came up! Thanks for your help, and thanks to DiskPatch, saved the bacon of a client...steve
