Hi,
First, thanks for the tremendous support here.
I first used your tools years ago, returning customer.

I have a Seagate ST31500341AS that's suddenly had a problem. The  drive is detected by Seatools and I was able to run a Spinrite Level 5 and performance test on it. But it seems to be only accessible from a non-Windows environment. Windows stops during the boot process, Windows in Safe Mode will freeze while booting but twenty minutes or so later will finally come up. Even in Safe mode, Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium just freezes when I run Disk Management or try to access via Windows Explorer. Access from the low level environments of a Spinrite or Seatools USB boot doesn't seem impaired.

Seatools reports issues and seemed to correct them, but really doesn't.
Sadly it doesn't appear DP from a USB boot sees it. Not sure where to go from here. I'm ready with another disk to clone it if needed. Report.txt and  DP.log are pasted in below.

Hi,

Diagnostic doesn't seem to detect it. DP sees 4 disks, how many do you have? What's the size of the Seagate?

That's a Barracuda 1.5TB.
Just to add: in reviewing some discussion about Spinrite and a similar problem, it was suggested to turn AHCI to IDE in the BIOS. This worked for me for Spinrite. I didn't want to try it for DP until I heard from you folks, but I got impatient and did, and it then showed up in the initial DP disk scan (with about 6% health). But I still couldn't see it to select for any operations.

In many cases, especially when setting a BIOS to compatibility settings, booting from USB will cost you a disk slot. Meaning, the first hard disk will be the USB disk that you boot from. This can be remedied (if it is a problem, which it could be if you have more than 3 disks) by using the DiskPatch bootable CD.

If the problem disk shows up in newer logs then please post these.

My bad, I misunderstood.
The four disks is a limitation of DP. I thought you meant it  was only seeing four disks, which I knew.
Sorry! Now I understand. There are 5 + the DVD drive. I will unplug all but the problem drive and retry.

OK, restarting DP needed to set the mobo drive settings to IDE.

At "Startup Checks" - "One or more Startup Check results require attention, please  check the manual for details." <Press any key>
No idea what that means.

Continuing, it did again find the drive in question and seemed to scan it, again reporting "Health: 3%". But again, I didn't have the drive listed to select.

I'm attaching a picture of the screen showing what I had to choose from, in addition to the Report.txt.

I'm confused. The problem disk is disk 2 in the DiskPatch selection screen. You can't select it?

On a side note: when a disk is at 3% health you might as well assume it's all over. All you can try is a clone and if that doesn't work out you're basically done.
And all the other disks are also not at 100%. Probably not cause for immediate concern but keep an eye on it.

How do you get that that's the Seagate? According to the Report.txt the Seagate is Disk #0 and Disk #2 is the Western Digital.
I can select any of the choices but they don't match with what's in the pc. To my eyes anyway.

The type ID (ST31500341AS) is in the report.txt file, which shows (a bit further down) the exact number of sectors, which can be linked to the disk list in DiskPatch. Also, the size in GB/MB (although a rough indication) will also tell you.

The sequence in the report.txt file is not the same one as in DiskPatch; disk 0 in the report is not disk 0 in the DiskPatch list.

Ok, makes sense.
I have a couple 2TB drives in transit, should arrive tomorrow when I'll try to clone this which is all I really want to do at this point.
Meantime, what can you discern is actually wrong with this drive? It seems I can run scans on it and all the sectors can be read (although I haven't made any changes to it). Yours and Spinrite report performance is 100% yet DP also reports this 3% health and of course Windows just chokes trying to read it. Spinrite actually completed a level 5 analysis and didn't find any read/write problems.

Anything I say would be speculation. I do think that the 3% takes things into account that may not present a big issue for this particular disk, but may present issues for the o.s. Thinking out loud here.
The main thing is to stop using this disk and make sure that the next thing you do is a clone.

Is there a way to restart the process from where it was interrupted?

Maybe the DiskPatch log has an indication of where things went wrong, you could use that info to select a new region to clone. Apart from that, if you have no idea how far the process got, you'll have to re-start completely.
If you're good with disks you could search the target disk and see how far DiskPatch managed to get. If the target disk was empty before you started I guess it's possible to figure out where the clone stopped, but it requires some expertise. You could use the DiskPatch disk editor to figure this out. If that's not for you, re-start the whole procedure.

Well, I'm happy to report a happy ending. I'm now uploading all the stuff from this poor old Seagate to a new Synology NAS running the proprietary SHR on four Hitachi Enterprise class drives. I needed to dedicate a pc to the task of cloning which took just over four days (the "estimated time" was all over the place). Then it was simply a matter of hooking the fresh drive up to a Windows pc and all the data was there to move off.
