A reinstall most likely.

If windows boots you've already managed to get past the potential problems that we can fix. Our tools help restore partitions back to life in the sense that we can repair certain structures that define the partitions. The actual inner workings of partitions (the parts that are destroyed by chkdsk runs) can usually not be repaired. So if you want to recover stuff from this partition you'll need to use a file recovery tool like iRecover, to copy files from the damaged partition. Repair is not an option.

One thing that jumps out is the 128Gb warning, but that's issued for the other disk, not the one that has the problems you described. Either way it should be checked out. Read more here:
www.48bitlba.com

Another thing is that chkdsk says that things can not be read, but i'm not sure if that means that the actual disk has read problems. You could run a surface scan to verify whether the disk has hardware problems or not.
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_surfacescan.htm
If so, that may have caused the problem, but the fact that chkdsk has run already probably means that recovery will be tricky. Although the description you gave shows that chkdsk has run in read-only mode, that still makes changes to the disk. What has changed however, i can't say, but in general you should stay away from chkdsk if you actually suspect that the partition has problems.

Hard disk problems and data recovery is new for me.  Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of the folies of using CHKDSK until after I ran it, relized my delima, then searched out DIY Datarecovery... where of course the first thing stated is do not run CHKDSK.    Embarrassed

A valuable lesson learned!!

I will start working on the file recovery then the surface scan.

Thanks again,
David

Ok. Let us know if we can be of further assistance, and how things progress.

It's probably best to do the surface scan first, verify the disk's hardware status. If the disk HAS problems, you should probably not start a file recovery; the action may make the disk worse. Depending on the status of the errors, if you run into hardware problems with this disk, you should clone it first and then start file recovery.
So check the hardware first, and post a log if you run into problems. Also, a smart check may be in order:

I guess I acted a little quick on the data recovery... I purchased and downloaded iRecover on the weekend then recovered as many files as possible from Drive C: (disk 0).

Should I still clone the disk?

Here are the results of the surface scan:

The disk shows read problems, but at the end of the disk. Usually nothing much is found there, so it shouldn't be a big loss. If you have already managed to recover all the stuff you need then cloning isn't necessary.

It depends on what you wish to achieve. If you want to keep using this disk as-is (meaning the stuff that's on it) you could clone the disk and then use the clone, if the clone was successful. That way you could save yourself a complete reinstall. Obviously this is only valid if the clone is 100%; if areas get skipped because of read problems this won't work.
But if you wish to replace the problem disk (because of reliability) you won't need to clone it. Simply recover what you need, replace the disk, and reinstall as needed. It's up to you, really.

I wanted to recover as many files as possible... one of the more important files was my Outlook .pst file.  Yes, at work we preach back up all the time but at home I was negligent   Embarrassed

Most of the files that were lost and not recovered were under the C:\Documents and Settings directories.  iRecover recovered a good number of the files but there are still some missing (i.e. the .pst file).
iRecover showed a count:  37927MB 94942/24130/3464

So my first goal was recovering as much data as possible.  Given the read problem I won't spend time on cloning the disk.  I will determine if the disk can be salvaged then re-install XP.

Any suggestions for using/configuring iRecover to attempt recovering more files?

Not really. The chkdsk run has most likely created more problems than it solved, and if iRecover doesn't find files, you may assume that they can't be found. If we think of anything else we'll post, but right now i can't think of things you should do to improve your chances, with the exception of cloning.
