Hello,

Hopefully you can help me with the situation I am in, I have attached the generated log below.  I have had issues with my main system drive after removing Ubuntu.  The drive was left un-bootable and I attempted a fixboot/fixmbr from a Windows CD.  This caused the drive to not boot, and when viewed from a Linux live CD the drive would show with ASCII chars for the filenames.  I have viewed the drive structure from an recovery tool and it could successfully show the filenames but not fix the drive.  I am not trying to use DiskPatch.

Nothing much seems to be wrong (except for some small problems in a backup area of the partition but that doesn't have any effect on the situation) so you should be able to access the partition. It's unclear to me what you did to arrive here (remove ubunto, how? you performed a repair with diskpatch, why?) but nothing much seems to be wrong. Have you tried accessing the partition to copy files to safety? Best would be to use windows pe or a linux live cd that understands NTFS correctly, then see what happens.
The partition is not active, so windows will not boot. If you wish to change this, read this:
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_partattr.htm
Make sure that NO diskrepair utilities like chkdsk will run when starting windows.

Okay, heres how i've ended up here in steps:

1. Install windows
2. Install Ubuntu 8.04 + GRUB
3. GRUB wouldnt work because BIOS needed an update.
4. Updated BIOS but forgot to reconfigure RAID
5. Re-installed GRUB to fix it post-BIOS
6. Realised RAID was not as it should be and attempted a re-build.
7. GRUB would not load stage1
8. Tried to change RAID settings back to (5) but no luck in getting GRUB to boot.
9. Attempted a 'fixmbr' from Windows CD - no luck in booting Windows
10. Attempted a 'fixmbr' and 'fixboot' from Windows CD - no luck in booting.
11. Viewed the partition in Ubuntu live and it appeared corrupt (jumbledASCII file names were)
12. Carried out repairs using DiskPatch to the state above.
13. Changed the disk to active after producing the log file in my earlier post.

As it stands, I can view the files from Linux Live.  I cannot boot Windows.  When I attempt to boot Windows I get a few random ASCII characters printed in the top left of my screen.  When GRUB failes it prints GRUB in the top left of the screen, I don't know if thats failing but the output is jumbled due to the 13 steps I have carried out above.

Either way I'm not sure what to do.  I have a disk on order from a UK supplier so that I can copy the data off and carry out a re-install of Windows if needs be.

Well, as you probably know by now "fixmbr" and "fixboot" are the biggest mistakes anyone can make in scenarios like this. Strangely enough though there doesn't seem to be much damaged caused by these commands, usually worse things happen. You could try the following to see if the boot sectors are currently valid: run a boot sector repair. Read more here:
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_ntfsbsrepair.htm
Make sure to save the undo, if this doesn't change the result run the undo. If you go ahead with this repair i'd like to see the resulting log.

Also, do i understand correctly that you have access to the files on the partition? So you can copy stuff to safety? That would be the first priority then.

Sorry I should have said, between steps 11 and 12 I carried out the fix boot sector part of this tool, which did contain errors,  I went back to do it now and it said that it is fine (done and done both showing in green) and that the boot sector didnt need repair...

Hi,

I am not really familiar with the inner workings of Grub. Anyway, if it's still 'doing something' I'd try to get it 'out of the way' as IMO it's a complicating factor at this point. So, is there an option to uninstall/disable it and later if desired to re-enable? You can then troubleshoot this as purely a Windows startup issue.

- First things first; if you haven't done so copy user data to a safe place.

- Make sure MBR boot code is correct, use DiskPatch for that http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_mbrrefresh.htm

- Make sure bootcode in the partition boot sector is correct, use the DiskPatch 'Inject bootcode' feature for that.

- If Windows then still fails to boot, then depending on exact symptoms you could run Fixboot from the recovery console

- If Windows then still fails to boot, then depending on exact symptoms you could try a Windows repair. Maybe it's wise to create a DiskPatch support analysis logfile at this point so we can see if Fixboot didn't mess up the boot sector again.
