New User with Laptop Boot Problem

Here it goes:

Operating Specifics:
HP Pavilion dv 5000 laptop running Windows XP SP-2
Hitatachi Travelstar 80 gb/5200 rpm ATA-5 Hard Drive

Problem:

Wifey dropped the laptop while working in a .doc file (her thesis)
Computer will no longer boot the OS. I get the Bios screen and the Windows Scroll bar, than it flashes the blue screen and re-boots. (I cannot read the blue screen)

Steps Taken:

I have tried removing the hard drive and hooking it up externally via USB to another PC. The PC recognizes the disk drive but will not allow me to access it.

I have downoaded and run Hitatachi's Drive Fitness Utility, so far with errors found on one or more sectors.

Run DiskPatch (See Log File Below)

Goal:

The primary goal is to gain access to the files on the drive so I can copy the important ones off (namely the wifey's thesis)

A secondary goal is to regain access to the drive so it will boot the OS.

Attached is the Analysis Log that was generated from Disk Patch. Will the program be able to repair the drive to attain my goals?

The error type that comes up suggests that the disk may be "repairable". That would mean in this case that the problem sectors can be "refreshed" but the contents if these sectors may not survive. So to deal with this situation you'll have to do the following:
- Use iRecover to retrieve the file(s) from the disk.
- Let DiskPatch do a full read/write scan (repair after error enabled). Make sure to read the details about this in the manual, it's not a big read.
It's not guaranteed that after having fixed the read errors the disk will be normally accessible. If the problem sectors were in areas that held disk bookkeeping structures, these structures will most likely be corrupted and normal access won't be possible. For this reason you should first try to recover the files you need using iRecover, and then see if these read errors can be fixed. That way you'll at least have the files that are important to you.
It's also best to have the disk in it's original machine when performing these repairs and/or recoveries (this is especially true for the read error repair actions. For iRecover the disk may be connected through USB, but it's still not preferred). Make sure that the laptop can still be trusted, and create a BartPE disk if needed (to run Windows from a CD if you can't run windows from a hard disk). Also, have something connected to receive the files when running iRecover; a USB key for instance would do fine.

Note: you'll need a license for DiskPatch to run the read/write scan. The iRecover trial allows recovery of some files, so that may be enough for you. If not, you'll need a license for that too.
