Hi there,
Recently one of my disks became inaccessible, the PC no longer recognises it even though it can be seen in the Disk Management window and shows as Healthy. At one point it did show in Windows Explorer and when clicked on it was reported as being unformatted.

In the original PC there was an error shown when running your program but I was unable to save the log. The error displayed was 'Attention: MBR read error on disk 1 (129)'. To make your trial program run and save the test log I've had to move the drive to another PC where it is the third drive and that error has not re-appeared.

The log doesn't show anything out of the ordinary, but it is also not the log we really need. The stickies/manual explain that we need the support analysis log, and how to create one is explained in there as well. But, nevermind that for now, because i don't think that log will show us much more that this one does.
The error you got usually means that the disk is having hardware problems. You should verify the disk's status by running the detailed health check (*) (check the walkthrough section in the manual, run the health check, and post the resulting log). Another thing to do is run a surface scan (*) (again, the walkthrough section contains a detailed explanation on how to do this). The fact that changing the location of the disk makes the error disappear is strange and points in the direction of things like cables or disk controllers.

Please answer the following questions:

Is the disk (in it's current location) normally accessible? The log shows no problems so i would expect it to be.
Also, the code in the MBR (sector 0) contains some weird stuff, is there anything on the disk that is special (like disk overlay software, or anything else that you use to access the disk, or boot manager stuff etc.) ? Was something exotic used to partition the disk?

(*) - these tasks can be performed with the trial version, no license is needed (yet).

Hi Tom,
Thank you for your reply. I was sure that I had run the correct log so have looked at the manual again and re-created and posted the support log. It does look slightly different to the first one. After that I ran the health check then surface scan. Both of those reports are listed below.

Regarding your queries, after boot-up the drive shows in Win Explorer but there is no data in the Total Size or Free Space columns. The PC also performs very slow when this drive is connected. If I select the drive in Win Explorer I get 'D:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O error'. The  disk is recognised in Disk Management and shows as Healthy with the capacity and free space shown as 465.76Mb (it's a 500Gb drive) and the file system column is empty whereas the other drives show NTFS. There is a single partition on the drive and as far as I remember it was formatted by the manufacturer's drive utility.

The problem drive is drive 2 and the surface scan found 5 errors.

Hello,

Those disk read errors are rather serious error 02 means 'address mark not found' which means the disk has trouble finding low level (below file systems etc.) disk structures it uses to locate a sector. IOW the disk has trouble finding it's most basic structures to address a particular sector and this is probably due to a mechenical/physical failure. This disk should no longer be trusted.

To recover data from the disk, clone it for example using DiskPatch. After cloning determine if the disk can be accessed (without using special software). If not, run data recovery software like iRecover to recover data. After the data has been recovered you should get rid of the disk.
