If I post the log from the diskpatch demo, can you read it and determine if Diskpatch can effective repair the two partitions on the drive that have a TON of very important data to my friends' business on them?
I want to make sure that his $$ spent are worth it...need the data..

Please let me know...

Thanks!!!

Update...Figured it would be easier just to post the log file anyway.

The drive in question is DISK1 ( 129?) should be 2 partitions with data on them and one with no data.

3 things:

It would have been nice if you described symptoms and the situation, as we request in our much read sticky posts.

The disk health is low, so look at that. Run a disk health check (check the walkthroughs in the DiskPatch manual). Post the resulting log file.

It seems that not all partitions are in the partition table, so it is to be expected that currently not all partitions are accesible. This in itself can be fixed by DiskPatch, but i can't say if that will make the partitions accessible again; we don't have enough information to make that guess, so you'll have to try.
If the disk health turns out te be bad, you may need to clone the disk before attempting repairs.

Tom,
The underlying issue was a failed Norton Partition Magic merge of the C: partition and an adjacent smaller partition to increase the size of C: for the pruposes of creating more capacity and to continue to use the drive. The poor health of the drive was unknown at that time, and we believe that was the root cause of the failure.
I ran a SMART check and posted here...
I am off to work ( its early am here in Florida!!) so I will check back later as to what the next steps should be.. I have a partitioned 500Gb drive into two segments that I can use to clone the entire disk to in order to repair the partitons, but I am unlcear as to how that can be achieved. I have never cloned a bad drive before...A little insight would be very helpful..

Regards,

The underlying issue was a failed Norton Partition Magic merge of the C: partition and an adjacent smaller partition to increase the size of C: for the pruposes of creating more capacity and to continue to use the drive.
Now see, THAT is relevant info and changes the picture quite a bit. Failed partition merges are a good recipe for disaster. In fact, i think even starting one is... Anyway, usually an interrupted merge (depending on how far the operation got) means end of story. You could try that diskpatch repair to see if volumes become accessible again, but that's not guaranteed. To top it off we don't see the interesting bit of the health log, we're missing the SMART section. Please try that again, or make sure to only post the portion of that health log that is relevant to the problem disk.

Options:
1. repair the partition table using DiskPatch and try to access the volume. If that doesn't work:
2. use iRecover to lift data from the damaged volumes. In this case repairing won't happen.

Whether the disk needs to be cloned or not i can't really tell now, we'll need to see the complete health log first.

If you decide to jump in and perform that repair with DiskPatch, make sure to read our refund policy first. We try to cater for this sort of situation by having a flexible refund policy, but it's still good to make sure you've read it before going ahead.

Tom,
since the drive is nearly dead, I'm not concernd about fixng, just getting as much of the data back as I can...Would iRecover be a better option in this case to get the data from the two important partitions rather than trying to clone and repair? Data= business back up  Smiley

I will post the health log as soon as i figure out how to get that from the demo..I must be missing that piece, but i will re-readthe notes on the site to get it right..

Appreciate the insight.

Regards...

If the disk is indeed dying and the data is important, you have only one course of action: clone the disk first, then use iRecover on the clone.

any suggested software for cloning this damaged disk? Not a process I have had to experience yet...

DiskPatch is one of the best (and most affordable) cloners out there, but the choice is obviously yours.
You seem to have developed the idea now that cloning is the only way to go but that has not been my suggestion (although it's always a good idea). We still haven't seen the report i asked for and my suggestions were based on what we've seen sofar (which isn't a lot). So did you find out anything more then? What's the reason you are now sure you want to clone the disk?

If you decide to go ahead with the cloning, make sure to read the manual part that explains the procedure.

Hello Tom..
I would send you that report, but I seem to be unable to generate the report you are asking for ..
I did a SMART report, and I did a analysis report ( initially), so I'm not sure what other report you are referring to..
Guide me as to where to find it / run it, and I'll send it right away.. My position for wanting to clone is the 12% health of the drive more than anything else..

UPDATE:

I went in again and re-read the manual, and apparently i must have done something wrong the first time I ran the SMART report, as I re ran the report, and got a completely different output... user error...

See report below. this is the disk with the issues...

Yes, that 12% (13% in the report) would be a very good indicator that cloning is needed. I'd say get started as quickly as possible, that is, if you want to clone. If you have backups you may just simply ditch the disk and replace it, then reinstall everything.

no backups...just what was on the disk and the 2 partitions... So is my best option here to do cloning and then iRecover or you think the drive will handle the iRecover process?
How do you go about cloning a disk that doesnt show all the partitions? sector based cloning?

It's not wise to run iRecover (or anything anymore) on this drive, if recovery is hi-priority, which it seems to be because there are no backups. Clone the disk ASAP.
Cloning is (always) done on a sector by sector basis, so what's on the source disk is of no concern: everything (hopefully) is copied.
Clone the disk, then run iRecover on the cloned disk (the result disk).

Again i would like to say: read the manual, at least the clone part. The manual is well written and explains everything you've asked sofar. Also, the walkthroughs are very handy, they include step-by-step explanations and screenshots. Take a look, it'll help you get underway.
