My pc was running XP Pro (SP2).  It was shutting down and installing Windows Updates when the power was suddenly interrupted.  Afterwards, it would not start.  Also, when I ran DP, it gave me an error about how my current disk geometry (255/63) was different than the original, and did I want to revert to the old one that DP detected.  I have pasted the log file below:

Hello,

There's a number of hints in the logfile which by themselves could prevent a system from booting.

Quote
### _ACT_|_TYPE_|__START--C/H/S_|__END----C/H/S_|__LBA-start_|_LBA-length
..1 ...0 | ..07 | ....0...1...1 | .1023.254..63 | ........63 | .781417602

This shows the only present NTFS partition isn't active. For booting you need one active partition.

Quote
.MFT Mirror Location (dec): 12209667
....Clusters per FRS (dec): 246
.Clusters/Indx Block (dec): 1
...........Volume ID (hex): 841CBE861CBE72B2
........Volume Label (txt): (Err)
............Checksum (hex): 00000000
....Sector Signature (hex): AA55

This from the boot sector. Based on those values DiskPatch will find the MFT and MFT entry storing the volume label for this partition. However it encountered an error while doing so suggesting either that values in the boot sector are corrupt (although it looks valid), or the MFT record itself is corrupt. Whichever of those two it is, it will prevent the system from booting and accessing the volume.

.../000:33/PFC> Disk health 50-100

Not a problem by definition, but maybe it is wise to post a disk health report here as well.

It is not said that the disk can be repaired by DiskPatch, and even if this would be possible, it will not be a standard automatic repair. Based on the logfile my estimation is that the MBR and the boot sector are intact (apart from no active partition being set) and that it is the file system itself that is corrupt (the MFT).

Where do we go from here?

1. If the disk health is ok, and there are no bad sectors, we could see if the backup MFT contains enough data to fix the start of the MFT.

2. The other option is that you'd recover your user data from this volume with iRecover, and then after we determined the disk is healthy, you'd reinstall Windows and restore the recovered data.

It is wise to post the disk health report, and run a DiskPatch surface scan in any case.

I ran the additional reports, although I stopped the surface scan after several hours when it found no problems.  Below are the reports:

Update:  I set the NTFS partition to active and tried to boot, but it still can't boot.  It flashes the BIOS screen and ends at a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner.

It seems the disk health is ok, although you should have left the surface scan to run to completion.
So the original advice stands:
Quote

Option 1 means we will need diskpatch's diskeditor to take a look at stuff on the disk, it will be rather tricky and you will need to buy a license. Option 2 is easier for you as a user.
Given the scenario (disk updated while power went out) i'm inclined to say we willl end up with scenario 2 anyway.
A thing to try would be to access the problem disk as a secondary disk, see if you can connect it as a secondary disk to another system that has a running windows and try accessing it. You will need that sort of setup if you need to run iRecover (option 2), or you could use the Windows PE setup to access the disk in the original PC. See if accessing the disk works, if not, run iRecover to see if files can be recovered and take it from there. When accessing the damaged volume, never run chkdsk, even if windows suggests it.

Can we please try option 1?  I already have a DiskPatch license (pro version).  I am fairly confident that I can get my data (and most is backed up anyway).  There is more value for me in trying to get the computer to boot into the existing Windows installation in order to save the many hours of work that it will take to reinstall everything and get the PC back to it's latest configuration.

Also, I don't know if this is a clue, but when I started DiskPatch it gave me a message about how my disk's current geometry was different than what DiskPatch saw, and it gave me a choice between 255/63 and something else (I think it was 192/xx or similar).  I chose the 255/63.  Was this correct?  Does that give a clue?

yes, the 255/63 should be fine. I don't know whether that was a clue or not. I'll prep some text for option 1, i'll be back in a bit, but personnally i wouldn't trust my windows after such a scenario. But that's just me.
Also, please post a fresh support analysis log (i assume you've changed a few things, so i will need to see the current situation, fresh).

Please do this:

start DiskPatch, select the disk, start the diskeditor.
Press F4 (GoTo) and enter 97677399
Now dump this sector to the log file (check the menu, F10).
After that press page-down twice
Now dump this sector to the log file (check the menu, F10).

Okay, the MFT copy seems valid, but that doesn't say much. The idea now is to copy (part of) the MFT backup to it's original location and see if that helps. Do this:

1. start DiskPatch, select the disk, start the diskeditor.
2. Press F4 (GoTo) and enter 97677399
3. Select the "export sectors" function and save 8 sectors to file, note the filename that DiskPatch assigns to the file
4. Press F4 and goto location 191

(at this point, if the undo function is on you won't have to make a backup of the sectors you are about to overwrite. if undo is off export 8 sectors from this location as well, that would be the backup then)

5. Select "import sectors" and use the filename that you wrote down at step 3

That's it, you now have restored part (the part we can actually restore) of the MFT. Now try accessing the disk. It may be wise to not simply boot the PC but to try accessing using another parallel windows installation, if possible. Or you could create a BartPE bootable windows XP cd and see if that gives you access. Either way, if windows suggests it, NEVER run chkdsk.
If needed, BartPE is at http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder

If this doesn't help you will need a tool like iRecover to lift data from the damaged volume, or, if you have everything backed up, reinstall everything.

I followed your instructions.  Then I used Bart PE disk to see if I can access the disk.  Using Runtime's Disk Explorer (on Bart PE disk), it shows a valid NTFS boot sector,  and also an invalid boot sector.  It also shows invalid MFT.  I have iRecover on my Bart PE disk (version 2.1), and it did not see the drive at all.

Is it possible there is more than one boot sector on the disk (from my prior recovery attempts)?  I can post things that the tools on Bart PE are telling me, if that would help.

And? Did you open an explorer and try to access the volume? Any (windows) error messages?
Why would you now start looking at things using NTFS explorer?

That's odd. Especially since you can access the disk using NTFS explorer. It should be said though that we are at version 3.4 with iRecover now, and you are using 2.1 as i understand. It should still be able to access the disk, but the point is that we don't support 2.1 anymore. Try with our latest iRecover version and make sure that disk access is not set to logical volumes (look in "advanced config", "disks and partitions").

I booted to the Bart PE and then ran a utility called "Testdisk" from my usb memory stick.  It tells me that my MFT is invalid, and the MFT mirror is also invalid.

GetDataBack for NTFS can see and browse the individual files, but I can't tell if they are ok or not.

Is there any way to rebuild the MFT?

Hello,

We have explored option 1, it didn't work. There are no tools to repair an MFT apart from Chkdsk that's built in to Windows. It's focus is file system integrity, not repair or recovery. It considers the file system/MFT repaired if it's consistent even if it has deleted half your data to accomplish this state of consistency.

1. If the disk health is ok, and there are no bad sectors, we could see if the backup MFT contains enough data to fix the start of the MFT.

So, if data remains to be recovered from this disk, use something like iRecover. Then reformat and reinstall Windows, restore backups etc..

We have to come to the conclusion that re-formatting and reinstalling Windows would have saved you hours of work, I'm afraid.
