In trying to rectify a persistent BSOD 07B (always appeared while XP was loading), I came across some recommendations to repair the MBR which could have been damaged by a virus (the BSOD developed after I set my AV software to perform a boot scan because a virus had beed detected).

Before I started looking at the MBR I tried CHKDSK, it repaired something first time and was clear thereafter.  A 27 hour run of Kespersky AV found and removed two trojans.  I reinstated previous copy of the registry. Nothing had any impact, until I tried MBRFIX.

I got the scary message from MBRFIX about the MBR being non-standard or corrupt and warning of dire consequences so I decided to go for a backup first.   I downloaded MBRTool, built two boot diskettes and performed two backups to file, no errors noted.

I then ran MBRFIX  (I eventually got the disk reference right).

When I rebooted I got Invalid Partition Table (before XP even started to boot).   I ran MBRFIX again, got the same warning about non-standard or invalid MBR, and was told again it was successful.  But when I rebooted the partition was still invlid.

At this point I decided to restore the MBR using MBRTOOL diskette.  I restored the MBR to disk 0 via the menu.  It was reported as successful.  But when I rebooted I still got the Invalid Partition Table  message.   I thought the diskette file might be damaged but I've compared the two backups using FC and there are identical.  It's unlikely the diskettes have identical corruption.

Why won't the restore of the MBR work?  Do I now need to buy DiskPatch to rebuild the partition table?  There's no encryption software, nothing 'non-standard' about the PC as far as I know, details below. 

Dell 8300 (about 6 years old) XP Home, SP3 via auto update.
It came with a 110GB disk and I added an additional 150GB disk later.
The Dell utility partition is still intact, I can still boot to H/W diagnostics.
DiskPart reports the following:

114,440 MB  Disk 0  on ID 0 on  Bus 0  in atapi  [MBR]

  C: Partition 2 ______   114,400 MB   (114,400 free)

C drive should be NTFS with a few GB free,  I can still see the contents of drive D with the XP repair CD.

Output of DP.LOG and DPSTATE.128 are below.
Another piece of information that may be relevant.  I have been unable to locate my original Dell XP CD.  The MBRFIX I executed was from a borrowed XP SP3 Recovery CD.  While this may have been what corrupted the Partition Table, I'd still hope the MBRTool restore would work.

Looks like a straightforward situation. The boot sector for the second partition (the one containing windows) is kaput. MBRtool would not be able to fix this, you will need DiskPatch to fix it. By running a partition table repair this should be fixed automatically by DiskPatch. If, after the repair, things are still not okay, or if you would like more feedback, post the post-repair log and we'll take a look.

Hi, I'm back four years later.  The same PC has died, this time it complains "\Windows\System32\Config\System" is missing or corrupt.   I've a registered copy of DiskPatch 3.5.300 from 2009.  I've tried latest version and a USB install but it failed complaining about a suspect partition and command.com.

Included below is a current report from the 3.5.300 version.  Should I run 3.5.300 DISKPATCH repair? (Disk health is reported as only 7%!)

Please don't 'necro' old threads, it's easier to keep a good overview if you create a fresh post in the correct folder.

It sounds and looks like the disk is dying. You should either clone the disk (if you need anything from it) or replace it and chuck this one in the bin.

If I perform a Diskpatch repair should I be able to get a few days out of the disk to backup some files?

No. The disk is in bad shape, physically. DiskPatch can't do much about that. You have 3 options:

1. try to copy as much as possible right now, directly from the disk. If the disk does not allow access you can use iRecover. If the problem disk is a primary (boot) disk you'll have to connect it as a secondary disk, to a PC that has a working Windows on it.
2. clone the disk and work with the resulting clone.
3. give up and throw away the disk (if you have backups of the data).

Option 1 may make things worse and can kill the disk while you're working on it. If the data is important you should use option 2.
