Hi,

I am having problems with iRecover during "quick mode prescan"
under the RAID analysis process.

At about 46% to 48% iRecover grinds to a halt. Seeks per second
reduce themselves to negligible amounts before iRecover eventually
locks up.

I have repeated this process several times.

I have included a screenshot below of where it comes to a halt
(approximately).

I have included a description of my overall problem below so you
may be able to assist me better.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

I am running a RAID5 array consisting of 5x 500GB Western Digital
hard drives. Total available space on the array is 1.82TB.

I am running an Abit IP35 Pro motherboard and using the on board
Intel ICH9R Raid Controller.

Due to some hardware problem (CPU dying), I had to reset my CMOS,
which inadvertently screwed with my on board RAID Controller. My
RAID controller decided to drop 2 of my 5 disks back to Non-Member Disks.

I (now foolishly) followed what I thought was a good guide to save
my array. I had to reset all my disks back to Non-Member Disks then re-create
the RAID array using the same parameters that I used the first time I set
it up. Then I was supposed to use a program TestDisk to help rebuild
the array.

Well little did I know that by resetting my disks back to Non-Members
and re-creating the RAID array, that my array with try and auto initialize
itself. This process of initialization ran unbeknown to myself up until
17% before I halted the process and went back into my BIOS and disabled
RAID because it didn't feel quite right!

I realize I probably caused further damage by conducting the above but
at the time I was in a bind and out of options (so I thought). So I went
ahead and bit the bullet and went down this path...

This was before I found iRecover.

I have used RAID Reconstructor & GetDataBack (runtime.org) which have
enabled me to at least see my file structure but attempting to recover
the files results in all files being corrupt.

So at least I know the files are there but yet to be recovered.

I also understand that the process I undertook before may have ruined
a portion of my files. I accept that. But would still like to access
whatever other files I can and there is a lot of data on this 1.82TB
array as you can imagine.

Your guidance and advice on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Coz

PS. It is an NTFS file system and the RAID5 array is independent of
my operating system (Windows XP Pro) which is on a separate disk.

Ok,

I canceled the scanning process as seen in the screenshot above. It keeps hanging
at or around 50%.

I decided to run the scan again, but this time drop one of the 5 drives from the scan.
I chose to drop drive 0104 because it appears that this is the drive that iRecover is
having problems with.

After dropping drive 0104 an 0500 parity drive is shown in its place,

I am assuming that's correct. The scan continues and completes successfully,

But as you can see after successfully (so it appeared) scanning the remaining
drives of the array I am presented with only ONE drive of 465GB in size.

My total array is 1.82TB. Each drive is 500GB (465GB available space).

Where are the other drives...?

Thank you.

PS. I just purchased a license for iRecover & DiskPatch - hopefully your ware
can save some of my data Smiley

 Huh

After selecting the only drive presented above, iRecover goes through
another scan process to build its file/directory structure and tree...

But... For some reason its showing my files from my Operating System
drive. My OS drive is an independent drive, not apart of my array and
I did not select this OS drive to be part of the scanning at all.

Now I am confused... ?

After purchasing iRecover & DiskPatch, I decided to run DiskPatch
in order to clone my disks.

Since I forgot to copy down my serial I had to reboot back into my
OS.

But after the Windows XP splash screen/logo shows up the screen
goes black and does nothing there after.

I can't even get back into my OS now after trying to run DiskPatch.

My OS drive was working fine before. My OS drive is independent of
the drives in my RAID array in which I am trying to recover/clone.

This is turning out to be a nightmare.

I can't access my e-mail to get my serial number for DiskPatch anymore.

Hello,

I am sorry about all this trouble you are experiencing!

Regarding DiskPatch:

The simple fact of running DiskPatch has never (yet) rendered a disk unbootable. Selecting 2 different disks as source and destination for cloning doesn't do anything that would damage other disks. So I am not sure what happened. Maybe a DiskPatch logfile could show. Please open a new thread that we will then reserve for this DiskPatch issue and post a support analysis log + the logfiles that are currently on the DiskPatch diskette in the DPFILES folder.

Regarding the failed array.

There are a few things we can try and I am not sure we need to clone the disks first (you'd need a lot of storage space and as long as we access the damaged disks read-only we should be ok).

Taking out the disk you did was a good idea. The volume you get you should ignore, a 500 GB FAT partition is impossible anyway as they can only go as far as 4 GB.

Instead, how was the array partitioned? If there was only ONE volume, right click the volume list > define volume manually and pick the option 'there was only one volume, scan the entire disk'. And then try again picking ther 'user input' volume.

My problem with DiskPatch is now resolved. I don't know exactly
what caused or solved the problem but never the less it is now
solved and I can boot back into my OS desktop to continue with
the RAID recovery.

Quote
"How was the array partitioned?"

I will answer this to the best of my knowledge. I setup a RAID5
array using the onboard Intel ICH9R Controller. I used the default
settings provided to me (64k stripe). In total I am using 5x 500GB
Western Digital hard disks.

Is that what you want to know?

I also received your e-mail and will conduct a "disk health report"
as requested.

From memory when DiskPatch runs it conducts a quick scan of
all drives connected. The drive 0104 in question had a health
rating of 14% and all other drives had 100%.

However I will run the scan as you suggested and post the
results back into this thread.

Thank you.

No. We need (or would like) to know the size of the volumes on the array, and how many there are.

There seems to be 1 bad disk, which is also the one causing trouble in the scans, as you found out earlier. Just make sure to keep that one out of the scans.

Hi Joep,

As per your request via e-mail here is the disk health report for all my
disks. Noting that the Samsung HD = my independent OS disk (working well).

Tom,

Hopefully this report gives you the information you need also, if not if
you could give me instructions on how to acquire that information I will provide
it for you.

Thank you very much.

NOTE: I tried to wrap the following in the "code" tag to make it look nicer
and although it works in post-preview it does not work when submitting the
post-to-thread so I appologize for the long mess of the REPORT text file.

I manually defined the size of the volume to 1.82TB to match the entire array.

As you can see from the screenshot only 46% of my files validated. Still rendering
most of what I need useless. I understand we must take validation process with
a grain of salt - but after manually testing most of my files I can confirm that most
of them are screwed even though they are present with correct file names and sizes.

Is this due to the parameters I've set on the right hand side (skip factor, timeout [ms])?

Is there a way to improve the results?

The one thing I did not do correctly as you said, was to select

Quote
'there was only one volume, scan the entire disk'

I defined it manually myself.

My files are there, just pretty screwed up. Is that promising?  Grin

Hello,

With the bad disk out of the way there is no need to tweak any of the settings in the run time control. And things like skip factor are of no influence if there are no disk access problems, iRecover will only skip nnn sectors IF a bad sector is encountered.

At this point I'd (still ignoring/not including the bad disk - it is probably best to replace that one later on):

- Delete the logfile (in iRecover installation folder)
- Go into advanced configuration
- Under NTFS, disable NTFS 1.2 compatibilty
- In common file system analysis set quick scan mode to disabled
- In overrides set force file system type to NTFS

Please do not play with other settings at this point.

If you restart iRecover for whatever reason, check those settings again.

Scan the array, select both RAID 5 types, disable RAID 0. If results do not improve, email me the logfile.

I ran a FULL SCAN with each of the paremeters you recommended set!

The scan found more files but essentially ended up with the same validation
percentage of 46%.

Still plenty of broken files.

As requested I have e-mailed you a copy of the logfile.txt for your
viewing.

Thank you again...

Hello,

I have the email, but nothing is attached. If you didn't do that already, try zipping it.

Hello,

Got it now. Please try again, this time in the RAID disk selection screen disable RAID5 LDM, so only leave checkerboard enabled.

Hi Joep,

I tried your suggestion. During the scan process I had to go get some sleep.

I awoke in the morning and my PC was OFF. Which was likely due to the
thunder and lightning storm we had last night. Brilliant! Bah...

Anyway I had to clear my CMOS to be able to boot the PC back up and when
I did I reloaded iRecover and loaded up the last "autosave" file which was
time stamped 5:15am (so must have gone OFF shortly after that).

Anyway as it went through its final stages I was met with the following,

Ouch, doesn't look good.

I am hoping that this was caused by the power outage but I have a sneaking
suspicion that it was not.

I am going to try the scan again with the suggested Checkerboard Parameter
set as you stated and see what happens with no power outage.

I have e-mailed you the logfile.txt again for your viewing.

Thank you.

Well... I tried the scan again this time there was no POWER OUTAGE
but I received the same result as seen in the screenshot above.

Unable To Continue
Unable to reconstruct the RAID
Unable to continue processing, program will now terminate
Not a bug - data is probably beyond repair, or something is misconfigured

I did follow your instructions and select "checkboard" layout for RAID5.

Am I missing something here?  Huh

I've sent you the log file yet again.
