Received  a Dell Latitude D620 from my nephew because it doesn't boot.  I don't know for sure what version of Windows it is running - a label on the front says XP was on it when new.  BIOS Setup says it has an 80 gig HD.

Ran the trial version of DiskPatch - log follows.  It had no read problems but says Drive 1 has 3 partitions that total more than 80 gig - one looks like it duplicates the other 2. (That appears near the end of the log).

I don't want to take a lot of your time if I should just use some kind of free DOS or program on a CD to format the HD - I don't need any data that's on the machine and I have an unused version of XP that I could load. (Not exactly sure how to do that - if I need to add drivers or something - like to run the XP CD after formatting).

I'd appreciate your advice.

Nothing much seems to be wrong, although the log is a mess (read the stickies, we like to see a support analysis log). Anyway, "windows doesn't boot" doesn't tell me anything, you'll need to be more precise. Any error messages? Does windows not boot at all and/or do you get past the BIOS startup?
Or, like you said, if you don't need anything from the disk and don't wish to spend time on this recovery, just reformat and reinstall.

Sorry if I didn't send the right log.  I thought it was what you wanted.

The machine  finishes with BIOS.

After that I get a screen that says:
"Windows Error Recovery
Windows failed to start."
It goes on to give me 5 options: 3 Safe Boot options plus  a 'last good configuration '  and a 'start windows normally'.
Selecting any of the safe boots gives me a Loading Windows Files screen and lists drivers loading several screens in length - they stop after crcdisk.sys - apparently incomplete.
Selecting 'start normally' or 'last good' I get the screen that shows the six bars moving across a small window indicating windows is loading - they move across the window 3 or 4 times and everything stops.

How would I reformat if I can't get the OS to load, just add a DOS format utility to your boot disk?  Any driver problems with that solution?

Your situation is not a recovery situation, it's a windows repair. We don't really support that sort of stuff but we have some tips here:

- try a windows repair. Start the pc from the Windows CD and select "windows repair" when the option presents itself. If this is successful you may need to reinstall the latest servicepack.
- if you don't need anything from the disk, perform a Windows reinstall. Simply start from the Windows CD and when presented with the options for install and partitions, delete the volume and then recreate it. That amounts to a format or complete delete of the old damaged stuff.

If you DO need stuff from the disk it becomes a recovery scenario. In which case you could use a BartPE disk to access the volumes and copy data to safety. Read more here: www.nu2.nu/pebuilder

Thanks, Tom.

While the machine boots from your disk, booting from the Windows XP disk gives the same Windows Error Recovery window as trying from the HD.

I understand this isn't your area of expertise.  Thanks for your insight.
