Had a really bad day. First my Seagate 500Gb failed. Managed to copy all my data to a 640Gb drive. Just after I sent the 500gb back for RMA, the 640gb failed!

Tried to clone the drive with Ghost 2003 but failed. The drive is getting worse eacn second it is powered on.

I am resorting to trying diskpatch. Thought I'll create a log with the trial version and sent it for an assessment before I commit to buying.

I encountered this error at about 20% of analyzing the hdd.

"Maximum read error <32 reached at sector ...".

Which option should I select?

Ignore the threshold?

Would appreciate all help!

In general, when faced with a disk that's failing, it's best to clone the disk. It depends on whether you have a backup or not; I understand that this was your backup so it's kind of urgent. Ghost won't clone a disk when the disk has read errors, and you may end up losing data because Ghost skips stuff when it encounters read errors. DiskPatch's Clone feature is made for this particular situation.

If you need stuff that is on this disk and you don't have a backup (and can't copy it from the disk by normal means), clone the disk. If you don't need anything from the disk, just return it under warranty (if possible).

The surface scan should be aborted; it's pretty clear that something is wrong. You may want to check some stuff (like cables and/or power supplies) because it's a little weird that 2 disks fail in such a short time span.

If you like you can create a disk health report and post it here, we'll take a look.

Tom,

Glad you are online. I will abort the scan to create the support log and create the health report instead.

You're right that I would urgently want to clone the disc asap. The data is important. But at the same time I'm wary of spending money if it would not help my case. what I'm trying to do is to fulfill the pre-condition for a possible refund by letting you take a look at the logs first.

Will upload the health report here asap! Give me 5 mins!

thanks.

Hi Tom,

I got an error code 021F:13B6 at the end of the test.

Outta desperation, I took a photo of the screen. Hope this helps..

I've uploaded it here - http://www.box.net/shared/ublhia1hgi

The WD 1TB was bought in a hurry to backup the files to.

Thanks.

Did the health check save a log file? If so, please post that.

I'd say the best thing to do is clone a.s.a.p. This will cost you a DiskPatch license and maybe an extra disk, but it's the only way. I can't be more clear with this advice. This will cost money, there's no way around that, but it's money well spent if things work out okay.

Did you check/replace cabling? Maybe switch the disks around, might tell you something? And did you check the controller? Maybe run some diagnostics on the board, if possible. See if you can make sure the disk is at fault here.

I'm not sure if you already managed to copy some stuff to safety, but please understand that cloning a disk will overwrite anything that is on the target disk. Read the clone part in the manual before you start.

No text logfile found on my thumbdrive. Just two files dp.lo1 and dp.lo2. Is that useful for you?

I've tried different cables and different controllers already. Am pretty certain that the disk is dying or dead because 1) it triggered the BIOS smart trip 2) it failed Seatools' short dst and 3) it is this way whether on a sata controller or through a SATA>USB controlller (just for testing).

Will do some post-mortem review to see what could have caused the problem. Temperature. Power supply etc. But that's going to be after the clone and recovery.

I did not manage to succeed in recovering any files yet. Just to get an idea of the full workflow from you - what happens if and after I successfully clone the drive with Diskpatch? I do not know how MBTs, sectors and partition tables work. What kind of repair should I run?

Update - I just purchased the license. At about 6% through of the 2 pass clone (with no dma), I got the same read error as the title of this thread. Selected proceed without threshold(Hope tt's the right choice). At 7%, I've got 8076 blocks skipped and 2409 mins remaning. Does skipped blocks mean lost data?

Not at this time.

That depends. If the clone worked out okay you can try accessing the disk and see if files can be copied from the disk. You may need to perform a simple repair with DiskPatch if some structures didn't get cloned. If the damage was too great and too many sectors got lost (meaning you can't normally access the disk), you'll have to try a file-recovery operation (like using our iRecover).

yes, right choice.
Blocks skipped doesn't mean lost data. Please read the Clone part in the manual, it's not that big a read.

I'm on the 2nd pass for almost 24 hours already. 11013065 mins left. 7000+ days? Is this likely to be just due to a slow patch that Disk patch is cloning? Screenshot at http://www.box.net/shared/h7fb0tljzl

I've been thinking what might have caused the failures to prevent a future repeat and would like to take this opportunity to hear your take on several points.

First, on how I think they failed.

The Seagate 500GB had a few random incidents of tripping the bootup BIOS SMART test before. But because a smart trip did not register on the windows version of Seatools and neither did it fail any of the tests, I was uncertain and did not act immediately. It was only after I realized that the DOS version of Seatools was more accurate that I ran it, confirmed a Long DST fail, backup-ed the data and RMAed the drive. For this, I think things went right- I just have to change my diagnostic routine a little.

The Seagate 640GB backup drive failed unexpectedly and caught me off guard, right after I RMAed the first. I think it was due to overheating. I bought a connectland caddy (http://www.connectland.com.hk/main/product/html/product_detail.php?id=392)  recently so that I could remove the backup drive from the system. Wouldn't do to have them all taken out in the event of a power surge It is cooled by a 40mm fan. When I backup-ed the data from the first drive, the 640gb was in the caddy. After opening the caddy enclosure and oberserving the fan, it seems that the fan is running a little slow and noisily. I suppose this explains how the 2nd hard drive failed.

So I will focus on cooling as a post-mortem. Please correct me if there are gaps in my analyses, and I would appreciate any suggestions that you may give.

What would you consider to be a safe, optimal temperature range for hard drives? Are there certain combinations or arrangements of coolers that you have found effective for a tower casing? Right now I'm just using generics and standard arrangements. Or any kind of cooling solutions you would recommend? I noticed also that because there are limited 3.5" bays on my tower case, the mounted hard disks end up pretty close to each other as well. Room temperature around here is usually 32 degress in the day and unfortunately I do not have the luxury of air conditioning them like server systems.

As for the caddies... Any that you have found good?

Thanks!

With a bad disk cloning can indeed take several days, but it IS a sign that things are bad. Also, the "time remaining" will adjust after the bad areas have been cloned.

I personnally don't have much to say about things like HD temperature, for the simple reason that these things differ from vendor to vendor. There are some obvious "don'ts" but in general HDs can take a surprising amount of heat. In my experience (from my systems management days) it's the vibrations that kill, not the temp. Temp does have an effect on lifespan though, and cooler is better in general. As such it's best to make sure that multiple disks (when placed inside a casing) have plenty room to spair between them for air, but that's obvious advice.
I'd say you should check the operating temp specs for your specific disk and make arrangements accordingly.

As far as caddies go, I hate them. Again, this is a personal opinion based on experiences. It's simple as far as I'm concerned; if you don't need them, don't use them. And they are especially unwanted when in a recovery situation. Caddies (and their connection methods) have a negative effect on bad disk handling, and on bad disk detection. We don't have a lot of caddy systems over here so i can't offer advice on what's good or bad, but the general idea should be clear here.

Been at the 2nd pass for > 48 hours already. Speed shows no signs of letting up. Last i calculated it take about 20 years to completion.

It has come to the point where being unable to access my system for a prolonged time has overweighed my desire to take the safer approch and do two passes.

The logfile DP.txt is 367mb. Is there some way I can cull relevant parts for you?

Win 7 sees the partition on the target clone drive. Assigning a letter to it results in a prompt to format it. What repairs should I run in DP?

My original clone source disk was formatted with Seagate's Acronis tool. Is choosing the Megabyte alignment correct then?

Thanks.

This doesn't sound good, the disk is in bad shape and you need to decide for yourself what you wish to do.

Nevermind that. It will be all read error notifications. The fact that the log is this big means the disk is dying. It's weird though that a new disk exhibits this behavior. Are you sure that the connections etc. are all correct?

Depends on how far the clone got. If you aborted halfway through pass 1 and the volume takes up the entire disk, then this won't help you much. Either way, if you want to get stuff from the target disk and the clone could not run to completion, you'll need a file recovery tool to lift data from the clone.

I'd say no, but try. The manual has some good guidelines for this, check the partition repair page. But normally MB aligned is for Vista (and later) created partitions.

I don't quite get you here. Isn't read errors expected from the dying disk? By new disk, you are referring to my target disc right?

>If you aborted halfway through pass 1

I completed the 1st pass and aborted in the 2nd pass.

I just tried a repair on the clone but Win 7 seems to be still unable to read it. It is now recognised by disk management as a RAW partition.

These are the settings and notifications I chose in and received from DP.

Disk geometry changed detected http://www.box.net/shared/rnq2f4ox7u

The partition list before repair; the label is correct http://www.box.net/shared/z6hpo0ilcb

Results of full disk analysis - 3 items (what are items?) found.

I'm not sure how there turns up to be 2 partitions found and why the labels are Err? http://www.box.net/shared/s0bhaspahc

The EPBR chain verification screen

My repair attempt seems to be unsuccessful. What can I do? Please help.

Post a fresh support analysis log for the clone.

If pass 1 completed and you aborted pass 2 we may assume that most of the disk has been cloned. If the following repair (on the clone) is not helping only one thing remains: file recovery. Use a tool like iRecover to copy files from the damaged volume(s).

How did you determine the repair was unsuccessful? Did you try to access the volumes?

I cannot open the partition in Windows. It shows the partition as RAW after DP has completed the repair.

Is this just a simple matter of changing the partition to NTFS?

I'll post the support log later if need be as the analysis will take > an hr and seeing as it's close to 5pm over in your time zone.

This is a copy and paste from the DP.log. Hope it helps.
