Greetings,

forgive me.  Ithink I posted my question in the wrong section.  I hope this is the coorect section for my question.

In a few short words i will give the past event that lead to this mess.
I very very low on my harddrive C: parttition. 
Below is the computer specs.

Gateway 650
20gb harddrive
2 partitions

1 formated 15gb(fat32) that has been in use for a long time
1 unformated and unparttion 5gb that has never been used
<512mb of ram
Winxp pro upgrade from win98se

Growing tired of always deleting files and running scandisk, I decided I would release my fears of expanding or for that matter partitiong the rest of the harddrive(5gb ). 

I used the winxp disk manager and decided to parttion and format the rest of the harddrive(5gb) to a primary NTFS partition.  Since it only going to be used as a storage partiton, I decided not make the parttion active.   Windows gave a warning that the formating did not go well.  I rebooted and thats when all the trouble began.  I recieved the "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file."
error.  Since I knew it was caused by the previos partiton effort, I didn't attempt to replace the HAL but instead use the recovery console tofix the boot.ini file. 

I appologize, I have forgotten what caused me to get this error notification "error occurred during directory enumeration

After checking on the net I found someone used the FIXBOOT and FIXMBR.  So, back at the Recovery Console, I tried a FixMBR I forgot to write the specifics but it didn?t change a thing and I was still able to get into reboot loop at startup.

Here?s where it gets ugly. I then issued a FixBoot command, and it came back with:
Fixboot is attempting to detect the file system type.
The boot sector is corrupt
Fixboot is checking the file system type
The partition is using the FAT file system
Fixboot is writing a new boot sector
The new boot sector was successfully written

Now when I try booting the PC, all I get is a ?NTLDR is missing? message.
At this moment, I used my trusty knoppix v5.01 CD.  Knoppix booted and I could see the drive using the patition info of the control center info and it indicated my drive is using on 10mb.  I almost passed out but didn't.  WHERE IN THE WORLD DID ALL MY DATA GO? 13GB's!!!.   Thats the story of events.

I like to know:
Can I get my harddrive back to a bootable state with all data intact?
Will a good bootable harddrive be bootable after diskpatch has clone it?
What is the best program and approach to use to fix my data situation?

Hello,

If all that had happened was the fixboot 'accident' we could probably have fixed that easily. it looks rather catastrophic if a lot of data just disappears, but it is the least of your worries: Most concerning is the state of the harddisk itself. It is in such a shape that it has to be replaced. There are a few hundred sectors that went bad that the disk has coped with: they are reallocated and replaced by spares. However there are several hundreds of sectors with read problems that have not been replaced yet. And it could very well be that this number will grow rapidly (based on my experience). So if the data needs to be preserved you need to clone the disk as soon as possible.

After cloning we could address the boot sector issue (which made your data disappear) and the chances for fixing that are fairly good. However, during the clone there will be sectors that can not be copied. What is in those sectors determines if the PC will boot from the cloned harddisk after that. If those unreadable sectors were used to store file system structures or important Windows boot files then the PC will not boot.

It appears the PC is fairly old (how old is it?). Because of that, the question is if the PC can cope with a large harddisk. It is unlikely that it can handle a disk > 128 GB. It may not even be able to handle a disk > 32 GB. You need to be aware of this before purchasing a new harddisk, if the largest disk it would be able to handle is a 32 GB then it will not be easy to even find such a disk.

The approach depends on that basically.

- If you can find a disk < 32 GB then you could clone with DiskPatch. And if we have some luck we can get that clone to boot but that is something that remains to be seen.

- If you decide, well maybe now is a good time to upgrade to a new PC then I suggest to use iRecover instead: I'd then attach the 'victim' disk as a secondary disk > image the disk using the iRecover (the new hard disk in the new PC would have plenty of room to store that image file) > and then use iRecover to recover user data from the image file.

Thanks for your response.  The HD health is a concern. Will you explain the health report and does (Threshold, Value, Worst) terms mean anything? The computer that has the trouble is a year 2000 version. 
I do have two more computers:
   AMD(year 2003 version) that uses a 60Gb harddrive
   Dell(year 2004 version) that uses a 120GB Harddrive
but I don't know if their HD health is good.  How can this be determinded?

I would very much like to do the cloning using the hardrrive from the AMD and seeing if diskpatch can get me booting again vs just getting the data using iRecover.   I will install the 60GB HD into my Gateway computer and see if my bios and computer will accept it.  If my Gateway computer does accept the drives then determination on which harddrive to use for recovery would be based on the health.  If my Gateway computer doesn't accept the 60GB HD(of course no need to test the 120GB) then it seems I'm left with no choice but to use the IRecover.  If there is a way to get my gateway computer booting again with my original data, I would like to clone my gateway computer drive to the 120GB and use the Dell.



To be sure I'm clear on your suggestion: "use iRecover to recover user data from the image file" what is the image file? Is it a diskpatch clone, copy, ISO, or what?HuhHuh

    I am currently using a dell as the boot computer.  What and which is the best drive to use to clone the bad drive that may become the boot drive?  If the clone doesn't boot, I need another drive to recover the data then...the best question is what is the best approch to using the resources taking into account all the possibilities and the condition of the drives?

    To read up on disk diagnnostics using SMART: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

    Rather than relying on the disk manufacturer thresholds, DiskPatch HDinfo makes its own analysis of the disk health.

    The Hard Disk "Model ID  . . . . . . . . . . : WDC WD600JB-00CRA1" is not a real good shape even though the disk manufacturer set tresholds are not yet in sight. It has reallocated sectors in the past. if this were my disk I'd back it up and test it. If the test doesn't show new problems I'd definitely monitor this disk with some like HD Sentinel. If it's condition appears stable then there is probably no need for alarm.

    The WDC WD800JB-00FMA0 appears to be in good shape as does the ST3120023A.

    So the latter two disks are good candidates, and if the WDC WD600JB-00CRA1 does not reveal problems during a read-only surface scan (you can do that with the DiskPatch trial) it can be used as well.

    Yes, I did look into the S.M.A.R.T. and was surprised that harddrive makers place a threshold value of zero for critical attributes.  When you say, "It has reallocated sectors in the past.     Hello,

    If you scanned the 60 GB disk I'd like to see the SMART report of that disk entirely. However it appears the disk is stable but I can only tell with a tad more certainty if I see RAW SMART data.

    Yes, Attribute 5 is reallocated sectors. That and attributes 196 and 197 are also intersting. It reallocated 103 sectors in 35 events. In the previous log there are no sectors 'pending', if that is still the case after the RO surface scan then no new bad sectors have been discovered. Threshold 0 means mostly those attributes are for statistical purposes only. They are properties monitored without triggering an alarm.

    But indeed, thresholds as set by manufatcurers are not what I am looking at. You could for example have 10000 sectors pending reallocation without your BIOS or SMART monitoring tool alarming you while it would be in fact quite critical. The DiskPatch SMART tool also takes non critical and statistical attributes into account when determining the disk health.

    If, after you view the the s.m.a.r.t. info I posted for the 60GB drive and all is well, I request your opinion on which drive is best that will eventually be in use for web development and another for backup considering the specs of the drive and the uses of the drives that I may resolve this issue?  It seem the 120GB is fast but is missing lot of attributes.  The 80 has a non-booting winxp o/s on it and the 120 is currently the what I'm using to type to you. Can the 80GB be fixed?

    I think I know when to make contact with you guys so I don't have to wait untill the next day to take action.

    An off topic issue why does the preview look different than the posted view?

    At this point i'd like to boil things down to their essence a little bit.

    You have a bad disk, you know which one. The way to get anything back from that disk is to clone it as quickly as possible. After the clone you may need to perform some repairs with DiskPatch, if needed we'll help you with that. Simply post a support analysis log of the cloned disk after you've completed the clone.

    We're not really into giving advice on disk use or selection, for obvious reasons. You are in the best position to determine what disk is best used for task "X". Things like access time and size play a huge part in this. Reliability may seem an interesting factor but it's not really possible to determine beforehand (based on looking at smart attributes) how the disk will hold out over the years to come. "Missing" smart attributes don't say anything about a disk's quality.

    The simple answer to reliability is: Redundancy and Backups.

    I already explained the 60GB is not 100% and why. Then I explained, that if after a run only surface scan SMART data does not change, the disk then appears stable. I am not going to give a definitive yes/no.

    I have preformed my first clone test but the cloned disk(120GB to the 80GB) isn't working as expected.

    Scenario:
    Note: all test done on a dell dimension computer
    Using a Dell that boots up ok with no problems.  I cloned the disk(120GB - the original HD in the computer to the 80GB)  with DMA enabled.  I cloned using the default settings.  It seem as though all went well and just for peace of mind, I performed the verify clone option. All seem to be good and ok.

    I disconnected the master boot disk(120GB) and left the 80GB in the computer as cable select.  The computer starts to boot to window and WHAM there is a BSOD!!  The BSOD flash so fast, I'm unable to read it.  Then the computer reboots all over in a continuous loop.  I was expecting the clone to boot as well.

    After selecting all possible XP startup options as well the option for last known good boot. I decieded maybe I should created another Support log which gave a choice:
    It request I select a disk, I selected the only HD(80GB) connected to the system.

    It gave me a notice:
    ATTENTION: disk geometry change was detected for disk 0 (128).
    The current (active) geometryis (heads/sectord) : 255/63
    The geometry found on disk is   (heads/sectord) : 255/63

    What went wrong? can this be fixed? What geometry selection to choose and what does this mean?
    Please select which geometry to use for disk 0 (128):

    then wants me to select the option:
    current  (heads/sectord) : 255/63
    old        (heads/sectord) : 255/63

     for which I aborted

    I'm sorry but I have to ask: did you read the clone section in the manual? You did a number of things very wrong, if your description is correct:
    - UDMA should be off
    - the target disk should be at least the same size, unless you are sure that the volume that you need to clone is smaller than the target disk
    - don't reboot the disk into windows after cloning

    I've spelled it out before, so I won't do that again. I'll look at the logs now and will update this if needed.

    Update: It seems the cloning went well but the target disk is smaller so it's reasonable to assume that not everything was copied. The BSOD isn't that big a surprise when you consider this.

    Update2: This is getting progressively weirder. As I recall correctly you needed to clone a 20 Gb problem disk. Now you cloned a 120 to a 80 Gb disk. What is going on?

    It stated you shouldn't use DMA if you are having problems with read/write.  Since these drives were not having those issues, I used the DMA.  Now I know DMA shouldn't be used at all during the cloning process.

    I used the dell computer with the 120GB since it was my working boot computer and wanted to test the cloning process before actually trying it out on the actual bad disk(20GB).   I know the first partition of the 120GB is the boot partition and
    according to(the 120GB analyst log) posted below:

    the first partition(boot partition and the partition I'm interested in testing) is smaller in sectors than the sectors for the 80GB HD so i didn't think it would matter if I just clone the entire 120Gb to the 80GB to get the first partition.and the drive would still boot to windows ok..maybe i am wrong.

    My apologies but this reminder I did not see.  Since you are not supposed to boot into windows, how does a person test and know if the clone actually works and boots into windows?

    I will try this cloning process again and set
    DMA = none
    DOD wipe = yes
    disk to wipe = 80GB
    clone target disk = 80GB
    clone sectors = 0  to 164119977 of the 120GB to the 80GB
    testing = how to test to see if the cloned drive will boot into windows since that isn't recommended?

    Please accept my apologies.  I don't want to confuse you.  The 20GB is still the problem drive and it is still in the gateway computer but since this is my first time working with your software, I don't want to kill the 20GB HD trying to figure out how to use DISKPATCH for cloning

    I will clone the drive and post the log again.  I hope all goes well this time and with your assistance, is able to get the test clone booting.  Thats is the end goal for the 20GB that is in trouble.
