In my opinion you are wasting time. Testing a clone scenario with 2 perfect disks is useless, it will tell you nothing. The clone will go perfectly and you'll be none the wiser. Besides, if even something that simple wouldn't work, we'd be a real bunch of frauds.
A real test would be to clone the bad drive and see how that works out. There is NO reason to wait and delay this operation. It will either go fine or it won't. The result will either be good or bad. Just keep the ground rules in mind:
- if the source disk is having bad sectors (usually the case if one wants to clone), disable UDMA
- if the disk has many bad sectors, set the skipsize a little bigger than default. In general, leave the default
- make sure the target disk is clean and in good working order and of at least the same size
- if the source disk is in real bad shape you might want to set the read retries a bit lower, to (hopefully) make sure the disk doesn't fail. A setting of 8 would be good for now, I'd say.

DOD settings have no effect on cloning.

You are right about the windows boot thing after the clone, that is not specifically mentioned in the manual. I will see to it that this is rectified. In general:
If the clone went well (hardly any read errors) you could try to boot the cloned disk into windows. But: never run any disk repair tools, even if windows suggests it. If there were many read errors there's a good chance that the disk won't boot correctly and the booting might make recovering files from the clone more difficult (because things are changed on the disk during the boot process); if the clone doesn't work correctly you will need something like iRecover to lift files from the disk, because normal access may not be possible.
In any case, the best thing would be to connect the cloned disk as a secondary disk and try to access it from a running windows. If that doesn't go well, use iRecover.

You are correct.  I have purchased the medicine so let me take it so I can get this 20GB HD working.  I have abandon the effort to test cloning from the 120GB to the 80GB.  Although the first partition on the 120GB is smaller in size than the whole 80GB, the LBA appears larger.  I am now cloning the 20Gb to the 80GB using the Gateway machine and got the "Max write errors (1) reached at 3920". 
I'm not sure what happen since I used the standard wipe to start this process over.  At the moment I'm writing zero's to the 80GB drive.

This is a GREAT matrix!! is this new? May I request it to be on the top list of the forums?  Using the matrix, I saw my problem immediately but don't know why it happen which is the reason for writing the zero's.

The Operating system boot test is almost a natural next step because most people will most likely be excited and will want to see if their clone is working...especially if they are cloning for backup purposes.  The good thing about this mistake is it wasn't fatal because I testing something I knew would work or at least almost work but a little nervous about the procedures. Thanks for letting me know and I am glad it will help others avoid the same mistake.

I am starting the clone process of the 20GB HD to the 80GB HD now.  I trust I will be able to post a clone log before you guys leave today.

Do I understand correctly that you are seeing write errors on the target disk? If so, that disk isn't a very good candidate for receiving a clone, obviously.

Note that if UDMA driver is active this may be resolved by disabling the UDMA driver - appears an UDMA driver bug.

I wrote zeros to the 80GB drive
Set the clone options:
disable UDMA
increase skipsize(2048)
set the read retries(Cool

The first pass is going good.  The second pass indicate it is going to take 13654min , 35sec to complete. Should I abort, post the log and star over with new settings?

The time to get through pass 2 seems to be as long as 10days.  Is that normal?

While the log indicated 322 readerrors were encountered, 548 Sectors were Reallocated to spare sectors on 392 different occasions with 537 sectors currently pending to be reallocated and out of the 548 Sectors Reallocated to spare sectors 442 sectors were Uncorrectable Sectors.  Hmmm..this doesn't leave that many good sectors.  Addressing the fact 537 sectors are still currently pending to be reallocated, does the Diskpact cloning process detect these 537 pending sectors as well as the 442 Uncorrectable Sectors to be bad and try to recover the data from them?  During pass 1 of the cloning process the read errors increased from 322 to 736.  I wonder why and what this may say for the data survival of the HD in those bad sectors?

since we now know the bad sectors, can IRecover get the data from those bad sectors using the list that is created from Diskpatch cloning process?

Does it appear fron pass 1 that Diskpatch will get my drive booting again?

do you have any belief  spraying freeze on the drive and , putting it in the freezer and some of the other feild techniques work for preserving the drive until you get the data work?

Hello,

A sector that can not be read results in an error. A sector that can not be read by DiskPatch can not be read by iRecover either. Data in a sector that can not be read is gone.

For each bad read disks may do their own error recovery procedure that can take upto two minutes. If DiskPatch tries to re-read the sector 32 times (default behavior, which is based on a few bad sectors and not a swiss cheese disk) that is theoretically 32 x 2 minutes. With hundreds of bad sectors DiskPatch's time required estimation will increase dramatically.

With every unreadable sector chances increase that the sector contains something that is required for booting or a file system structure reducing the chance that the clone will boot.

Thanks for your response.  Checking the logs and disk health stats above, what are my chances for getting all the data?  Is it possible to tell how much data percentage wise diskpatch has gotten so far?

Are you saying the read errors notifications I received before I aborted to post the log(Since I been typing this msg

In my opinion you are wasting time. Testing a clone scenario with 2 perfect disks is useless, it will tell you nothing. The clone will go perfectly and you'll be none the wiser. Besides, if even something that simple wouldn't work, we'd be a real bunch of frauds.
A real test would be to clone the bad drive and see how that works out. There is NO reason to wait and delay this operation. It will either go fine or it won't. The result will either be good or bad. Just keep the ground rules in mind:
- if the source disk is having bad sectors (usually the case if one wants to clone), disable UDMA
- if the disk has many bad sectors, set the skipsize a little bigger than default. In general, leave the default
- make sure the target disk is clean and in good working order and of at least the same size
- if the source disk is in real bad shape you might want to set the read retries a bit lower, to (hopefully) make sure the disk doesn't fail. A setting of 8 would be good for now, I'd say.

DOD settings have no effect on cloning.

You are right about the windows boot thing after the clone, that is not specifically mentioned in the manual. I will see to it that this is rectified. In general:
If the clone went well (hardly any read errors) you could try to boot the cloned disk into windows. But: never run any disk repair tools, even if windows suggests it. If there were many read errors there's a good chance that the disk won't boot correctly and the booting might make recovering files from the clone more difficult (because things are changed on the disk during the boot process); if the clone doesn't work correctly you will need something like iRecover to lift files from the disk, because normal access may not be possible.
In any case, the best thing would be to connect the cloned disk as a secondary disk and try to access it from a running windows. If that doesn't go well, use iRecover.

I used the setting above, will running pass 1 or restarting pass 2, decreasing the sector skip value to 1024, keeping the read retry value to 8 reduce time or harm the disk? Time remaining = 11765:16 is 9 days...what do you suggest for action today because I really can't go that long.   Looking forward to your resonce and it's welcome.

Your chances for getting ALL the data are ZERO. There are areas on that disk that can not be read so not everything will be copied. All you can do is try and see how far you get.
Absolutely NO predictions can be made about how much got copied; we don't know what areas of the disk contain data and what areas are skipped.

New advice based on your progress sofar:

If you already completed a pass 1 you can restart a pass 2, at which time all you need to adjust are the read retries (set them to 0) and diskreset (set to disable). Adjusting the skipsize only affects pass 1 so if you want to reclone with a lower skipsize, you'll have to restart the clone entirely. So you now have 2 options:
- restart the entire clone, set skipsize lower (to something like 8 or so)
- restart pass 2 and set read retries to 0 and disable disk reset

The clone may take days, this is normal for a disk that has problems. The disk will most likely be harmed in the process but this can't be helped. As such a good preparation is/was important, and letting the clone run to completion at least once would have been the best way to go.

About that freezing idea, forget that. It will introduce humidity and other influences that will kill the disk even quicker. The cold trick is mainly meant for disks that don't spin up at all, to see if the mechanics can be 'unlocked'. Sometimes cold may have a positive effect on read problems but in your case I'd just forget about it.
A trick that has actually had results in the past is placing the problem disk at an angle, meaning not flat in it's conventional position. Putting the disk on it's side or tilting it before starting the clone can have a positive effect, but may also kill the disk even quicker. It's up to you to take that gamble.

Keep in mind: if you restart the clone, what is on the target disk stays on the target disk until the clone procedure actually gets to an area and writes something. So re-running a clone does not necessarily mean that what's been cloned already gets damaged. Unless you wipe the target disk first, obviously. In fact, re-running a clone for the second time may actually lead to better results because if you're lucky the areas that could not be read earlier may yield some reads the second time around, so 'gaps' on the target disk may actually be filled in. If something is already on the target disk and that same data can't be read (anymore) from the source disk, it simply stays on the target disk; it doesn't get wiped or overwritten. Something to keep in mind.

did you mean set my skipsize value to 1024 and leave the retries at 8?

How may times can pass 1 or 2 be ran?
When i did pass 1, it didn't take long at all...only a few hours.  I feel I am going to re-clone using pass 1 only:
set lower skipsize = 1024
set retries = 8
set UDMA = none

Then I will re-clone again using Pass 1 Only:
set lower skipsize = 512
set retries = 8
set UDMA = none

then I will do pass 2 using Pass 2:
set lower skipsize = 1024
set retries = 0
set UDMA = none
set disk reset = none

then I will do pass 2 using Pass 2:
set lower skipsize = 512
set retries = 0
set UDMA = none
set disk reset = none

this may explain my disk health going down so fast...I started the cloning having my computer on the bench on its side rather than standing up causing my HD to be on its side.  Is it too late?  I didn't know this because lots of computer manufactures orientate their disk this way.   It would be good if you explain disk oroentation in your manual as well.

The re-cloning pass 1 went well..it took 10hrs.  It went to Pass 2 and ran out logging space .  I deleted some files on my floppy and restarted pass 2 only using the same setting

how can the logging location for pass 2 be changed if the cloning process started with a floppy for pass 1?
I want to post the result for re-cloning pass 1.  would that be log2 from the Dpfiles folder?
can dos usb support be added to the diskpatch floppy so the location of the log files be changed
