Hi,

My hard disk failed while it windows was running, resulting in a blue screen.

Ever since it makes an unhealthy sound when the disk is switched on.  I have copied the support analysis log below.

Can you please check with DiskPatch can help to clone the data?

Thanks!

Hello,

If the disk is in really bad shape then there is no other option than trying to clone it as soon as possible. If the data on the disk is absolutely mission cirtical you should consider sending the disk to a data recovery lab. That is especially true if the disk makes lots of bad noises.

That being said, Diskpatch will always try to clone the disk trying to put as little stress on the disk as possible.

Thanks for the quick reply.  The errors in the support analysis seemed to indicate that errors were in the higher sectors of the disk. The data is really nice to have but not critical. Can DiskPatch copy the data in the other sectors to another drive?

Thanks

Hello,

Yes, but the scan was only a partial scan + even the full scan does not read each and every sector of the disk. To gain a full picture you should run a surface scan. However, this is as 'aggressive' as cloning so I would clone immediately. By aggressive I mean that for a disk in a certain state every read can be an 'act of aggression', everything you do with the disk is stress.

The idea is indeed that DiskPatch copies all data from all sectors it can read to another disk.

I have bought a DiskPatch licence.  I am trying to start cloning, but it's been about 30mins since I selected the source disk and DiskPatch is stuck with the box "Reading Disk". It was able to display the disk partitions before I tried to select the disk.

How can I move things along?

Hello,

DiskPatch does some checks on the selected disk and it seems it is hanging while doing that. if it did get past this point before it may indicate that the disk's condition is deteriorating.

In the DiskPatch startmenu select Diskpatch options (troubleshooting) and then 'skip initial disk checks', and if it turns out that is not enough, select 'skip both disk and general checks'. DiskPatch should now skip the checks that cause the program to hang.

Hi,

Diskpatch has been running for more than 9 days straight now and has seems to have stalled around the 53% point for more than 2 days.

I ran out of patience and tried to abort DiskPatch but it did not respond. After some minutes, I reset the computer.  I have found that there are files in the sectors recovered by Diskpatch so far.

Is there a way to resume diskpatch from the 53% position while using the same target disk?  I have not written to either the defective disk or the disk I am restoring to.

Thanks.

Yes, simply enter a start and stop location when resuming the cloning. If you remembered the address location where DP aborted you can resume there, but if all you remembered is the 53% you'll simply have to calculate the address: 53% of the total number of disk sectors, and then maybe start a bit before that to make sure you're not missing anything. Or, if you suspect that the 53% mark is a particularly bad area, start a bit after that. You can also start at say 60% and see if that speeds things up, then try the remaining 7% later.
