I downloaded the trial but cannot get it to work per the instructions.

Burned it to a CD, formatted a 8 GB USB stick with the HP tool, enabled legacy USB in BIOS. When it runs, it cannot find the USB stick to save the data. However, in later menus it "sees" the USB as a hard drive.

Created a USB boot drive and extracted the diskpatch files to it, enabled the USB as the first boot device in the BIOS. It will not boot to the USB stick. On another computer I used F12 to select the USB stick, it still won't boot.

Created a floppy diskpatch. Ran it and selected "Create Support Analysis Log." It ran at at the end said, "State File could not be saved."

I am having serious doubts about this software at this point. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks.

DiskPatch showing the physical disk is something entirely different that DOS assigning it a driveletter. If you'd for example format the usb key with NTFS it will never show up as a logical drive, DiskPatch however does see the physical device. What drive letters does DiskPatch show you?

What procedure did you follow then? If you go for the start > programs > DIY DataRecovery DiskPatch 3 > create bootable USB key for DiskPatch then you shoule end up with a bootable USB key. What needs to be done in the system BIOS to allow booting from an USB device is something you need to work out using the motherboard/PC manuals. It is a fail proof procedure, if followed correctly, that will get you an usb key that will allow you to boot and run DiskPatch straight from it.

State file is something else than a logfile. Being able to save the state file depends upon the availability of some sectors on the harddisk. If those sectors are in use we will not create statefiles.

Update.
1) CD Boot & USB stick. The problem may be using a 8 GB stick. I switched to a 2 GB stick and the data was saved - even though the message said "The current selected location can not be used to save files, please select another location." This must be a bogus message.

2) USB Boot Drive. Changing nothing, and tried it again today and it did boot to my XP computer. Why not before I do not know. Perhaps the stick needed a few boots to initialized. However, it will not boot my Windows 7 laptop. The laptop BIOS is very basic with few options. I do have the USB stick set as the first boot device. It lights up and flashes but then boots to Windows 7.

3) State File not saved - however, the log file was saved. And on another computer the state file was saved. So this is understandable from what you said.

NEW)...Below is the log from an XP computer that gets to the "Windows" loading screen, but then shutsdown and restarts. This cycle repeats and repeats. [PS "System Failure" options are set with "Automatically restart" UNchecked. It is not overheating, and it is not a power supply issue. Replacing userinit.exe has no effect.]

Hello,

If Windows gets as far as the loading screen then the issue is not MBR, partition table or boot sector related. So DiskPatch can't be of help here.

And there is another disk with problems? Can you please describe those problems first?
