Hi guys.
I'm sad to say that I'm back again... you helped me before about 4 years ago and I hoped I would never have to come back again. But - here I am !

PC with XP Home, with 3 phys. disks:
disk 1 from partition C to J has various configs of XP / programmes and has HyperOS as boot / OS manager, and partitions K to Q for User Data, Programmes, pagefile, Photos, Music..
disk 2 and 3 each with 2 partitions: for HyperOS images & Data; Pagefile partition & Data

After a recent problem on the main OS partition J, I installed XP sp3 under Windows over the existing OS, just to repair it and then ran updates, IE8, Norton Int.Sec 2010.. and it's been fine since.  Yesterday was paying bank bills, browsing web  - all fine, and then ran two small XP updates.
On re-boot it stalled and I had to kill / re-start. CHKDSK ran and showed some sector problems. (Get the picture ?..). Next few re-boots got into Windows although very slowly (could hear the disk accessing and then pausing, and programmes loading very slowly).
Tried booting to C: using XP boot disk but was getting file not found errors (I think for xposkrnl and hat.dll in \system32.
(Normally to boot to another OS with HyperOS you boot to command prompt and type  sys {driveletter} )
At this point I guessed I might have a failing disk but that the problem was only in the sectors where my usual OS partition J resides, and so was trying to boot to C:.
Used the new XP CD to go to the Recovery Console but the only thing I could see to do was to use FIXBOOT and FIXMBR (which I did... and then later saw on yr web site that I shouldn't have !).
Tried by DISK PATCH v3 disk but didn't have the serial nr (if I have one, it would have been stored on this PC on disk 3). Used in trial mode and tried to make repairs.
Program startup shows disks 2 and 3 with 100% health, but disk 1 with only 63% health.
Tried my DISK PATCH v2 disk.
At some point one of the repairs was not completed I think bec of disk errors but I don;t remember if that was under the Recovery Console, DP 3 or DP 2 !
:-(
So I ended up making a new install of XP directly from the CD to the first (C) partition and got the machine up, and can access disks 2 and 3, but am only seeing the first partition (C) on disk 1 (ie: part's D thru Q are not showing). Could not find a serial nr for DP3 (only for v2 from 4 years ago) and the v3 DiskSetup file is now corrupt... but the v3 Diskette I'm using seems to be OK.. just need to purchase a licence for this version).

So this is where I'm at right now.
Last thing I did was use DP 3 to make log file (below) and then attempted repair (in trial mode) and it seems to find all the partitions... so am hopeful it can rebuild them again.
I'll order a new HDD today so I can pull all my data off this disk once I get the partitions back.

Dank je Wel !

Steve.

First, please use the latest DiskPatch version. We update the program regularly and the new features help us diagnose problems.

The partition list looks fine, with the exception that they are not listed in the partition tables, so no conventional access is possible at this moment. Which may have something to do with HyperOS, I'm not familiar (enough) with HyperOS workings. I suppose DiskPatch could recreate a partition list for you but from what I can tell that may interfere with HyperOS functioning. But at this point that may be moot, because you can't access stuff now anyway.

What's more important now is the fact that the disk may not be 100% healthy. You will have to make sure what the state of the disk is before continuing. Either run a disk health check or run a read-only surface scan. You'll need the latest DiskPatch setup for this. Both actions can be performed with the trial version.
Health check info: http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_smartcheck.htm

So: check the disk's health, then decide what to do, depending on the state of the disk. Post health results here, so we can decide/advice on how to go about this. In the mean time, I'd appreciate a link to the HyperOS site so I can read up on that stuff (and make sure we're talking about the same thing).

thanks Tom.
HyperOS works fine with the multi partitions. That's the whole point of it.. and I've had this arrangements now on 4 PC's for up to the last 6 or 7 years.

I'll do as you suggest, and then buy the licence for v3, as I think I only purchased licence for version 2 and my vers.3 diskette didn't accept my vers 2 serial number.

Have also ordered 2 new disks (1 TB's).

OK I got my v3 licence.
New support log below and SMART log from disks.
DP also asked whether to use Current or old Disk Geometry settings. Strangely, v2 and v3 diskettes were both showing different OLD Geometry settings.
I selected what it proposed as Current: 255 Heads and 63 sectors (which are also same on the other 2 healthy Disks in the PC).
v2 was showing 378 / 99 (Old: Heads  / sectors) and v3 showing 193 / 23, but both DP vesions showed 255 / 63 as Current geometry.

Surface scan does show Read errors: 13 in first third of disk and one nearer the end. Appears to be not in the current first (C) partition but looks like it could be in the region where the J partition was, which was the OS partition I was in when this all started...

The first disk (disk 0) shows its health to be 64%, so that disk is on the way out.

Physical Disk Information - Disk: #0

  Hard Disk Summary
    Hard Disk Number  . . . . . . . . . . . : 0
    Interface . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : IDE/ATA
    Connection  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 1M
    Hard Disk Model ID  . . . . . . . . . . : SAMSUNG SP1614N
    Hard Disk Revision  . . . . . . . . . . : TM100-30
    Hard Disk Serial Number . . . . . . . . : S016J10Y429811
    Hard Disk Total Size  . . . . . . . . . : 165148 MB
    Current Temperature:  . . . . . . . . . : 35 øC (95 øF)
    Power on time . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 1436 days, 23 hours, 51 minutes
    Health: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 64 %
    Performance:  . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 100 %

Also, other values and the read errors suggest this disk will probably need to be replaced soon. You should stop using the disk to avoid further deterioration.

There's two possible paths to follow here:

1. Get your stuff from the disk as soon as possible. That may require iRecover. You could attempt a DiskPatch repair to make copying stuff from the disk easier; if all volumes can be accessed at the same time the recovery will be smoother. It is possible that some files and/or areas are not readable, in which case iRecover may be needed, but as a first step you should simply try to copy everything you can to safety using conventional means. DO NOT RUN 'CHKDSK' OR ANY OTHER VOLUME REPAIR TOOLS, even if windows suggests it.

2. Clone the disk. If that works out good the resulting disk may be good to go, if you're lucky. It is possible however that some areas can not be cloned and this may lead to inaccessible files/volumes, in which case iRecover may be needed (if volumes are not normally accessible after the clone) on the cloned disk.

Option 1 is a bit of a gamble (the disk may develop more bad areas as you work with it) and option 2 is the safest way. But option 2 is also the most time consuming. In your situation I'd go for option 1: repair the volumes using DiskPatch and then copy stuff to safety ASAP, while keeping an eye on the disk's health. If the disk suddenly develops many read problems, or the health value drops sigificantly, I'd clone the disk. But it's up to you, it's easy for me to 'gamble' on other people's data (no malice intended).

Thanks Tom,
I understand completely and agree on option 1.
if DP restores the partitions, I can scan each [Data] partition first for health separately and see which ones I can expect problem / no problem with, and copy daat to new disk ASAP.
From last nights scan, I expect most of my data to be relatively safe as the errors were in the front third of the disk where the OS partitions reside.

Realise now it's good to scan for health of ALL disks periodically.

Surprised with this Samsung... the only other disk failures I've had were both MAXTORS <correction> which I won't touch anymore.
Other disks I use are Seagate & IBM/Hitachi.. no probs with those brands so far.

OK, seems to be working.
Partitions restored.
Surface scanned the data partitions and all except the MUSIC partition looked OK, and was able to copy all data (including all Music) off to another disk, and use the built in HyperOS Backup feature (which uses Sector copy, not file copy) also backed up several of the drives.

Seem to be in the 'clear' now. Will replace hard disk and use the opportunity to make fresh installs of the OS.
Thanks Again.

ooops !
I wasted the partitions on one of my data disks while setting up the new disk to install my multi OS set-up on.
I'd partitioned the new disk on one of my other PC's but the Win install CD was not able to use the first partition and wouldn't let me create one of the right format during Win Setup.
So I was using DP to try and fix it. When I started DiskPatch, I expected the new disk to be in the disk 1 (128) slot in the list like the original one with the problem, but one of my other 2 OK data disks on the PC appeared in the top of the Disk selection list (128) and so I was inadvertantly messing with that one to try and make a partition that the Windows Install CD could make a new partition on...
I only realised once I'd got the PC started and there were no partitions on that data disk ! (I was hyper ventilating.. thinking I'd lost it all..) !
DiskPatch was able to recreate the proper partitions no problem, so I lost no data.

Have now made partition Backups of all disks
THX for the help.
