Hi, I cannot boot from or access my main 320GB hard drive.  Full explanation below:

I had a dual boot situation - WinXP SP2 working fine on Partition 1 and Vista on Partition 2.  I couldn't get Vista to authenticate with my valid key for some reason (might have been the OEM disk I was using) so I attemtped to Ghost my old laptop hard drive (with authenticated Vista on it) to Partition 2.  Did this from within XP using Ghost 15 and all seemed ok.

When I rebooted, I was expecting to see 'Vista or Earlier version of Windows' but nothing - no boot options, only error messages - 'Disk read error'.  I gathered I had messed up my MBR so have spent the past week or so seeing what I can recover.

Current situation as follows:

- Disk detected in BIOS
- Won't boot as a master drive (Disk read error)
- When attached as a slave to another master, the master (XP) hangs just after XP screen
- XP Recovery tool boots but hangs on 'examining disk...'
- Found this site and ran DiskPatch and couldn't create a log file (assume it wouldn't write to c:) so reconnected as a slave and ran from there.

Results posted below.

Good news is I ran a document backup just before Ghosting so not so bothered about recovering data.  Bad news is my other hard drive (20Gb) is a little old, slow and has a health warning (40%) in DiskPatch so keen to know if I can get the 320Gb working again or not.

At first glance nothing much seems to be wrong, apart from some insignificant things on disk 0 and the health warning. This is however not the correct log for a full analysis, please check this:

Sofar though DiskPatch doesn't find anything it can repair so there's a chance that the damage lies deeper. Post the new logs, we'll take another look.
If the damage is more severe (in the volume itself) your only option to recover files would be to use iRecover, but you say that isn't that big an issue because you have a backup.

thanks, I've followed those instructions to create the two reports (incidentally the 1st report I posted was created following those instructions so not sure if this one is going to be any different.  Only thing is cannot write to primary drive, so tried usb drives (and formatting as per instructions) but not detected so had to reconnect the other HDD (20gb) to create the reports.

Nothing weird in the DiskPatch logs, so as far as the volume damage goes the problems lies deeper. That means that a repair is unlikely. There are also some hardware problems detected in the SMART log (for the first disk, you know that already: that disk is on the way out) and the second disk shows a few strange readings. We'll get back to that after further analyzing the data.

One more thing:

thanks, as for the boot error:

large disk detected in bios when connected as master or slave.  When as a master it goes throug bios startup then reads:

"Searching for Boot record from IDE-0...OK"

"A disk error has occurred.  Press CTL-ALT-DEL to restart"

and it pauses there.

But so I understand this ... You ghosted an XP install that was originally on a laptop to a hard disk on another PC? If so, then this is not something we can fix for you but I can tell you can expect problems when doing that.

When you have a dual boot with 2 windows versions, in general the newest (so Vista in this case) is going to take hold of the boot process. If I read correctly, you restored an XP install from a different PC on top of this Vista. Apart from problems you will have with regards to XP not liking being restored to different hardware, you also wiped out the Vista boot portion.

Also, you say you restored to partition 2 (on the same disk I assume), but we see only one partition per disk. Hiwhc suggests you may have restored not to partition 2, but on top of existing partitions.

Hi, I had XP first then installed Vista to a new partition and got the bootloader choice for booting.  As Vista wouldn't authenticate I ghosted my laptop hdd (a Vista build) onto the desktop Vista partition.  So it was Vista on top of Vista.

As for the partitions, I've tried so many things over the past ten days that I may well have deleted/messed them up - it wouldn't load either OS so I attempted XP recovery console to fix the active partition but it never seemed to access the disk.

I'm a bit confused myself and may have made things worse (how common is that) and all I would really like is to format the disk and start again if it's at all recoverable.

Right, Vista on Vista. But still, I don't know if Ghost handles that (I know older version were capable of updating the boot.ini file, but Vista does not work like that anymore). The Vista on the laptop assume the windows system and boot files are on the first partition. And now they are not as they were restored to the 2nd partition.

If you want to start over, simply delete the partitions from the disk, create new ones and format them. Or, let Windows setup run as it will tyake care of that itself.

that makes a lot of sense thanks - trouble is I can't access the disk.  Have tried XP and Vista install OEM disk but they hang when 'examining disk'.  Cannot access it as a slave drive (don't have a USB caddy so not sure of that route).  Tried BartPE but that went along same route as XP (ie hanging when checking disk).

Is there not something like a DOS/fdisk facility that I can boot from CD?  Would a Win98 boot disk at least allow me to format the disk?

The simplest way to really clear the disk and prepare it for new use, is to wipe the MBR. This can be done with DiskPatch (if you have the payed version) or for free with MBRtool (check our download page).
If you go with MBRtool use the menus to wipe the MBR. Look for 'wiping the MBR' in the manual, or simply go through the menus ('work with MBR', then 'wipe MBR').

thanks for all your advice - MBRTool worked a treat, cleared the MBR and allowed me to access Recovery Console to get to the disk.  Reformatted and now reinstalling OS..
