Hello,

Firstly, being embarrassed, I would state that I'm a Taiwanese student, who's English is not good and non-native. Embarrassed
Thus, if my sentence expression is impolite, please excuse me;
and if I use an improper word or ungrammatical sentence that might confuse your understanding, please tell me to try to explain again, thanks a lot.

My situation:

I have a hard disk with 3 partitons in it. The first partition (C:) is WinXP system, the second and the third are my personal files. All 3 partitons are using WinXP-formated NTFS file system.

Previously, I used Ghost 8.0 to make my C: drive to be a backup image, and it just worked fine in former "restore C:" actions.

Just before I attempted to restore my C: drive again days ago, at this time, I used Partition Magic to check if my partitions were good.
Partition Magic said that it found a partition strating location error (file allocation table error? I forgot the exact narrative...), and asked me to fix it or not.
I chose yes, then it was the begining of the tragedy.

At first, after fixing, Partition Magic showed another error, and could no longer read any partition.
then, after a rebooting, I continued to use Ghost , and it could recognize all 3 partitions.
Thus, I made the Ghost restore the C: partition from the previous image, and it worked successfully.
Then, I reboot, but the WinXP could not boot, and the BIOS said there was no system in the disk to boot.

I installed another physical disk(#2) with Windows7, using it to boot, and to find out that problem disk(#1).
In the Windows7 disk manager, it showed that the problem disk(#1) only remained 2 partitions:
the 1st un-bootable C:, and the 3rd patition were present, but the 2nd partition is missing, lefting an un-formated space.

My friend told me to use your iRecover to try to rescue the 2nd partition back.
I downloaded iRecover v3.4 trail, using "Recover data from simple volume..." and "Recover both current files..." setting, and it sure could recognize the files in the missing partition after analysing.

I decided to purchase iRecover, and I already filled out an order form, and got an Transaction Information page.
(If you want to check out my Order ID, please mail me in private.)
Then I found two problem:

1. Since I used trail iRecovery is version 3.4, but I didn't notice that the current version is 4.0 already.
Could this situation also happen to me?
     http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/forum/index.php/topic,659.0.html
If yes, could I buy the v3.4 unlock code instead of v4.0 code?

2. Due to my poor English comprehension, I chose to buy iRecover "Standard" license,
but can this license version having enough function to rescue my files in my situation?

* Please reply me by mail (the same as this registration mail) in private. Thanks a lot.

A helpless student, crying over a lot of important school work files, sincerely waiting for your help... Cry

Hello,

Don't worry about your English, we're not native speakers either.

In this situation i would first try DiskPatch to see if we can make the partitions accessible again. To try to determine that we'd need a support analysis logfile:
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_supportanalysis.htm

Regarding iRecover: the standard license should be fine as there is no need for RAID reconstruction in this scenario. Just go with iRecover 4, in case it's needed we can always revert to iRecover 3.4.

Thanks for reply and kindness (to my poor english).
I've tried the DiskPatch and sent the logfile to your mail box (by attatchment). Please take a look.

Thanks for explanation. I don't use a RAID system.

I (Tom) have not yet seen that email, where did you send it to? It's actually more practical to simply copy/paste the log file in a forum message, so if you could do that we'd be very grateful.

Becaus i have another question included (about payment transfer, ont technically related),  i just sent the mail privately, for not to mess up this technical-oriented forum. Smiley

Oh, sorry, i foget to paste the log file just now... Tongue

I would like to mention one thing:

If you see some strange characters, that may be caused by Chinese character codes, wishing they would not affect your reading...
(I saw the text file encoding format is ANSI, does it help if i change the format into Unicode or UTF-8?)

Hello,

Please run the scan again, this time selecting vista (MB) alligned. I can understand why you selected pre-vista as you are using XP. However, the current layout suggests MB alligned partitions. Please paste that logfile here again (will be the new dp.log).

Hello,

The following new DP.log posted is run by using "MB alligned" setting.

Annotation:
  In the disk list,
"128" is the DiskPatch USB stick,
"129" is the problem hard disk,
"130" is the Win7 backup system  that i use to access this forum.

(I'm sure that the DiskPatch checked on the correct problem disk, becuase i've used the "showing partition" function to make sure before checking.)

I really used XP on this problem hard disk, and originally formated it by XP format tool last year.
What might cause the patition format (or file allocation table structure?) to change?

Sorry to beg for one thing,

Because i have much school work to do that must use the files in the missing partition, i'm hurrying to rescue back the files.
Troublesomely, due to the time-zone difference, it is already Friday noon now in Taiwan.
If i want to make the wire transfer, i sould be quick before the bank is closed... Sad
(few other transfer trouble is explained in the earlier mail i sent to both of you, please refer.)

Could i transfer the payment before my disk problem determing result, for that i can get the code earlier to try to save my files back?
on the other hand, might you think it's dangerous to save data myself before your determing result report?

We have a refund policy, so you can purchase what you think you need and if it turns you don't need it or haven't been able to use it, we'll refund.

If you would start working with DiskPatch you change things on the disk, so maybe it's best to wait for our advice on that. iRecover however is read-only, so working with that can do no harm.
We'll be right back with info on the log.

Hello,

Well, I think DiskPatch isn't going to work. That middle volume appears completely disappeared. So I think the best options is to run iRecover. Then, when running iRecover, in the volume list you will need to define a volume manually (right click). Enter sector values 31464720 for start and 593656560 for the size of the volume. Then scan the volume where origin is marked 'user'.

We have a refund policy, so...
I've read the refund policy. Undoubtly it's good on itself.
But the bank clerk said, "according to the "anti-money-laundry laws" in Taiwan, international money transfer should be monitored."
That's why, such a simple payment transaction, the clerk requested me to provide my official passport English name to fill out the  application form...  (and recorded my ID card number and other info... lol)

This simple transaction took me much time to put it into practice, (and i even cut some school classes to go to a governmental affair for gathering the info needed...)
I've done the payment transaction already this aftenoon, and it took me almost 3hrs to finish (including in the affair).
I wonder if i will have to use the refund process, how much time i might spent to do it... haha...
(i.e., i hope iRecover could work, but won't use the refund process...)

I used DiskPatch ONLY for generating the DP.log file for reporting. Unfamiliar with this software, I did nothing more.

Thanks for advice,
i just used this "manual setting" method on the v3.4 trail, ( i learnt it from a taiwanese forum)
and it certainly showed almost all of the directory tree in the missing volume after its analysing.
The only uncertainty is, i don't know if i could really restore back all of them i saw before...?

Do I understand correctly then that you purchased a license for iRecover? If so:

has only one answer: try and see if the files come out ok.

I'm not sure, given your description, how a refund would work... But we'll work something out if needed.

Yes, I submitted to purchase the "Standard" licence, and got the payment (transaction) instruction webpage days ago,
(if you want to check out, i could mail you to show my "Order ID")

and I've completed the payment trasaction process (by wire transfer) in the bank ALREADY this afternoon.
(I mean, my local time zone, about 3:00 PM. Mybe its Friday dawn in your time zone...?)

(Sorry to mislead you, i used the improper word "transfer" on the previous message, some of them should be corrected as "transaction".)

Otherwise, in the private mail i sent you yesterday, i mentioned that,
due to the Chinese-English translation difference on my name,
i wondered if you might be confused to receive my payment transaction?
Did the only information - the "Order ID" i annotated on the transaction form, give you enough information to distinguish this payment?

Don't worry, I wasn't considering the fact that the transaction itself had gone wrong, I was wondering whether you have the iRecover license key or not. Because without the key you can't recover files, and given that the transaction was problematic I was concerned you might not have received a key. Sorry, should have phrased the earlier question better...
Anyways, if you have the key you can get going, yes? Let us know how things go.
