Dear DIY,

I purchased your program after scanning initially my 2 HD's that I am having problem with. Here I will address only the one that is more pressing, the family pictures and documents. Yes I back up, unfortunately both computers are in the same location, my home, and a massive power surge took care of both disks, this has not happened here with the power in over 15 years, but that is another story.

Now for the problem. Diskpatch finds the disk and lists it, however when I run it, it never gets past the "Select Disk" state. It will read, with difficulty, and then return to the initial menu, not allowing access to any options.

This is the only log I have been able to muster up.

The Disk started making noise after the surge and I got a call from my wife informing me of the noise. I naturally asked her to shut the computer down ASAP.

When I came home I tried the disk (no unusual noise) and the BIOS sees it (windows did not), however there is no access to anything. I have NOT done any recovery attempts, such as FixMBR or sectors, as I wanted to clone the disk first to keep to nondestructive recovery. I was gong to use your program to accomplish this task, but am unable to get to complete the select disk process. I did 2 passes to try and on the first one I got green checks on all issues, but on the second there was a red exclamation mark for the disk health.

There was also an error stating "MBR not accessible".

Perhaps you can assist me to make further progress.

Below is the log that I was able to get.

It seems communication with the disk is/gets corrupted. This may be caused by damage to the disk, or by other factors such as bad cables or a bad power supply. Make sure the connections are good, and check the power supply. If other disks in the same machine work fine (and the log seems to indicate that is the case) it's probably a problem with the disk. Please create and post a SMART log:

Another trick to try is to put the disk in another PC and see what happens then. Make sure not to boot from the disk, stick to using DiskPatch to access the disk.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the info and your help. I am not completely new to this, I have been messing with computers for the past 25 years Smiley.  I did make sure that the cable works, also using another computer, so I am pretty satisfied that the computer or its hardware is not the issue, not even the problem disks home computer, it runs everything else there, 3 HD's just fine. I should probably mention that the disk in question is Win XP NTFS, 320 GB IDE WD Caviar, although I guess you gather most of that from the logs.

Here is the fresh SMART log, the problem disk is disk 1. Disk 0 is brand new, out of the box yesterday, and shows health of 94% humm....

Disk 0 shows the onset of decay. If that disk just came out of the box I'd return it. The problems aren't big, but this simply shouldn't happen to a new disk, in my opinion.

Disk 1 seems to be out of reach; DiskPatch (and the PC) can not communicate with the disk. Some disk details can be read, SMART stats can't. I recall that things like this can sometimes be fixed by flashing the drive's firmware, but don't pin me down on that. You'd best google around a little for info on that, or wait for comments by Joep (there's two of us); he knows more about this type of thing. Might take a bit of time though, it's midnight here now and the weekend has begun.
