Gentlemen:

I was browsing a ZIP file on an old distribution disk (original, not a copy) when I received a 'corrupt CRC' message.  While dealing with that (I may have selected 'continue'), another message appeared about needing to repair the MBR.  I (foolishly) selected 'yes', and as you can imagine, I can no longer boot that machine from its only hard drive.
   OS:    WIN 95a (FAT16)
   HDD:  WD 136AA  13.6 Gb (LBA = 26564832)
                 Partitioned as 6 2Gb partitions (Pri + 5 logical)
using E-Z BIOS (ver 10.0W, StorageSoft, Inc.) from WD

The end result when attempting to boot from the hard drive is:
   Invalid system disk
Replace the disk, and then press any key

I have downloaded DiskPatch 3.5.300 (71) and created a boot diskette.
If I boot using that diskette and select Support Log File, it shows
'No Ext13H support detected, disks can not be accessed':

However, if during startup (no diskette in A:) I enter E-Z BIOS,
then insert the DiskPatch boot diskette and select
  boot from A:
I can generate the following Support Log File:

Does this indicate that DiskPatch will likely be successful in restoring this drive?

Thanks,

To be honest I'm not entirely sure. There are some problems: the logical volumes are not in the partition table and the dump of the root directory shows only weird stuff. DiskPatch could add the logical volumes again, but that weird root folder dump may suggest internal volume corruption. You'll simply have to try to see what the status of things is. Make sure E-Z BIOS is active when performing the scans and repairs. When DiskPatch re-creates the MBR it's likely that E-Z BIOS is disabled so after the repairs you may need to enable it again. Keep the install disk for that handy.

Tom:

Thanks for the analysis and quick reply.  I found the Data Lifeguard Tools diskette that I think was used to install the HDD.  I'm not sure if there is an option to ativate/install E-Z BIOS without partitioning/formatting the HDD.  The DLG user guide only references selecting Fully Automatic Install.

Should I go ahead and purchase a license for DiskPatch?

If I understand the manual correctly, I should first attempt to rebuild the partition tables, and if that is successful, make the primary partition active.  At that point, if I am unable to boot from the HDD should I select 'Inject Boot Code' (to recreate the MBR) or run the 'Check and Fix Boot Sector'?  If this disables E-Z BIOS and attempting to re-install E-Z BIOS repartitions/formats the disk, what are my options?

The DLG Tools diskette also includes some diagnostics:
'There are two test options on the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics main menu - Quick
Test and Extended Test. Quick Test accesses Data Lifeguard information that is
stored on the drive during offline scans and verifies a defect-free status or
recommends the Extended Test. The Quick Test test takes 90 seconds.'

If the resulting status message is 'Restore the Hard Drive to a Defect-Free Status',
it suggests the following:
'The hard drive has errors. Use the Repair Drive option to attempt to repair the
hard drive. Data on the hard drive is only lost when tracks are relocated,
not when sectors are relocated. A warning message displays whenever this
occurs. Relocate tracks only after you have backed up the data on the hard drive.
After completing the Repair Drive option, Data Lifeguard Diagnostics scans the
drive to verify the hard drive's defect-free status.'

This seems to imply that it can only fix (remap?) bad sectors.  Since it may automatically try to fix any errors it finds, should I run these diagnostics?  If so, when?

Thanks,
Ben

Well, the manual suggests a repair and NOT a boot. Only boot if you are sure there is no internal damage, and that is something we can't verify here (yet). So repair and then try to access the volumes from another active install (or DOS, in this case, because it's all FAT) and see if the files are all okay.
Rebuilding the MBR will most likely disable E-Z BIOS (because its start code is in the MBR and DiskPatch builds a new one that doesn't have that boot code). As such you need to re-activate E-Z BIOS after the repair, before trying to access the disk. You'll have to figure out how to do that, I'm not familiar with E-Z BIOS. Make sure nothing is wiped or formatted when re-activating E-Z.
In addition, you could make a backup of the MBR with MBRtool before getting started, we might be able to use that after the partition table repair to restore that exotic boot code. Won't hurt either way, to have that boot code stored somewhere.

Injecting boot code in boot sectors is a specific operation that may not be required, forget about that for now.

No read errors are found, there is no reason to assume bad sectors at this time. Forget about that whole diagnostics thing, it won't fix anything that is related to the current problem.

Your suggestion to save a backup of the MBR to a file is good.  Since there should only be the one PRI partition, is selecting option 2 on the MBRTools menu (automatic backup of all MBRs) the best, or should I use some other options?

If I rebuild the partition tables, but can't find the directories/files I think should be there (such as the 'windows' folder in the root directory), can I get a refund?

Yes, I thought so.

Those things are not related. Simply save the MBR of the disk you're going to work on. Save it to diskette/USB, NOT to the disk.

According to the refund policy, if the recovery is not successful you can apply for (it doesn't say get) a refund, but we're reasonable people.

I made a backup of the MBR and rebuilt the partition tables.  Partitions 2 - 6 (logical drives D: - H:) seem OK, but as you mentioned initially, nothing shows for the root (drive C:).  What do you suggest as the next step?

Verify the contents of the volumes you have access to, and save files if needed. The repair seems to have gone fine, except for the C: volume.
The C: volume has some strange values in the Boot sector, you could run a boot sector rebuild to see if that helps, but I'm not confident it will. Won't hurt however, just make sure to keep the undo files.
This explains how to:
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/dp_manual/guide_fatbsrepair.htm
Post the resulting log if you'd like us to verify your actions.

The damage we notice now however seems to point out that the contents of the C: volume is damaged or even gone, perhaps the result of the strange interactions you described in your first post, who knows. If the rebuild doesn't help and you need stuff from that volume, you'll need something like iRecover to analyze the volume and copy files to safety (if possible).

Even if an attempt to reinstall E-Z BIOS was successful (and it did not automatically repartition the drive), what would be chance of recovering the data and having a bootable, working drive?

BTW - I installed the drive in an external enclosure and connected it via USB to my XP machine.  I can see/access all the partitions, but of course the first partition (C:\) only shows 2 zero byte files.  However, when mounted in the WIN95 machine, I cannot access any partitions unless I boot through E-Z BIOS.

What would be the likely outcome of using DiskPatch to replace the MBR?

Since both of these options seem risky, and I just purchased the DiskPatch license on the 26th, what kind of deal can you give me on iRecover Standard?

Thanks

By now, slim to none I'd say. That BS rebuild failed because a number of things are damaged or gone, so the internal damage is apparently to severe to get normal access again.

That's expected. It's probably best to continue the recovery on that XP machine.

On the XP machine, same as things are now. I assume you refer to rewriting the MBR boot code, as the MBR rebuild already essentially replaced the MBR. Rewriting the boot code (which would replace the current exotic code with XP standard boot code) would make no difference when trying to access the volumes.

As far as I can tell, if you need data from that C drive, you'll need iRecover to get it. Understand this though: iRecover doesn't repair. Repairing this doesn't seem likely anymore, it's about recovery now. When you have what you need from the volumes you should probably rebuild the volumes (i.e. re-format and re-install).
What I can offer is this: buy the DiskPatch/iRecover bundle (which includes a discount) and then we'll refund the original DiskPatch purchase. But if I were you, I'd try the iRecover trial version first, see if stuff can actually be found.

There is one additional option, but I'm somewhat hesitant to mention it. You could attempt a FAT repair. The problem is though, unless you have the necessary space, there's no undo (syncing a FAT can lead to a big amount of sectors being written, so a big undo archive) and that may lead to bigger problems if the FAT can't be repaired. Still, if you run DiskPatch from a USB key and have plenty of space, a FAT repair (make sure you have undo on!) could lead to something interesting. IF (-if-) the FAT repair is successful you can then retry the BS repair again. But, again, make sure that for everything you do the undo is on and that the undo files can actually be saved.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions that a repair is unlikely.  I have purchased the bundle and received notification of the pending refund.  iRecover was able to retrieve most (if not all) of the C: volume that was not visible with the earlier repairs.  I needed the 'Scan for Missing Volumes' to find the others (D - H).

Before I give up and wipe/reformat this drive, I want to explore it a bit more so I can ask better questions.  One thing I have found is that the directory is at sector 513, not sector 452 as expected by initial Support Log File.

Thanks again for your help.

That's what DiskPatch finds as well (boot sector + (fat size * 2). Thing is the cluster size 'does not compute' this may be due to the partition size being wrong. We could edit the partition table (there's unallocated space between the first and 2nd partition) and do the boot sector repair again, won't hurt now you have the data anyway. I'd change the LBA sectors for the first partition from 3169089 to 4192902 using the partition table editor, save that, and then run the boot sector repair for the c: drive again.

Hey, my 888st post!

Joep:
Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll have more questions about this after I explore a few more sectors.  I would prefer using your Disk Editor for this to (hopefully) eliminate possible offset differences if I use a different product (HxD).

Do I need to do anything special (USB drivers, etc?) in order to use DiskPatch on my XP machine?  The internal HDDs are SATA and the 1.44 floppy is connected to the internal USB.  There are no EIDE or 'conventional' floppy connectors.  I can boot using the DiskPatch 1.44 floppy.  I will be connecting the 'bad' drive from the WIN95 machine via an external enclosure connected to a USB port.  As expected, the XP machine uses NTFS, while the HDD from the WIN95a machine uses FAT16.  My reason for this configuration would be to direct the log and undo files to one of the XP drives.
How do I tell DiskPatch to do this?

When I start DiskPatch from the Start Menu with the drive mounted in the WIN95a machine (direct EIDE connection), it starts quickly.  However, when I tried it on the XP machine configured as above, I aborted the operation after about 60 seconds since it was taking much longer and I was seeing significant retry indicator action.  No log file was generated.

Some general pointers:

Booting from a (USB) floppy disk will automatically save all DiskPatch files to that floppy, so no need for additional storage tricks.

Connecting a hard disk through USB is possible but not preferred. The USB interface can distort the disk details and this can lead to DiskPatch mis-interpreting things like the disk geometry. This is not good when working with partition tables and boot sectors. Note: it doesn't HAVE to go wrong, but it might. That's why we always say "if possible, connect the disk directly through its native interface". USB is also very slow when accessed from DOS (as DiskPatch does), and if the disk has read problems things may not work at all (USB doesn't handle that type of problem very well).

Usually when using a modern day PC or laptop there's no need for USB drivers when using DiskPatch to access USB connected devices. If it doesn't work, try looking at the BIOS settings and play around with the USB legacy settings.

Hope this answers the questions.
