on-board repair tools

Problem description
|
When in a situation where you need to recover files, NEVER run 'chkdsk'
or similar operating system internal disk repair tools: if problems exist on a
volume 'chkdsk' will rather delete files than repair things. This is even more important
when the disk has physical problems (read errors): don't run 'chkdsk' on disks
with read errors.
If Windows suggests running 'chkdsk' and you have reason to believe that
problems exist on the volume (i.e. you are in a situation where something bad
happened and you are recovering files), use a file recovery tool to copy files
to safety.
